Hi, We have a 91 E350 at work that I need to fix. I don't have a service manual (yet). It's a chilly morning, and the glow plug light only comes on for 1 second or less, not enough to get it to start. Then I hear a clicking sound, like a relay switching on and off for about 30 seconds. How do I trouble shoot this? I am supposed to fix it right away. Also, the brake lights don't work and I don't have a fuse locator chart to see what fuse is what. Thanks for any help, Joel

 

Pick up a copy of Haynes Diesel Techbook #10330 - it's crammed with glow plug and fuel system troubleshooting info. Most parts stores either have it or can get it. You definitely have glow plug problems. Your Wait To Start light should stay on for 10-15 seconds on a cold day if all plugs and the controller are working. The clicking you hear is the controller cycling. Until you can check all your glow plugs, it might help starting if you wait until all clicking has stopped before cranking.

 

Thanks for the reply curmudgeon. I checked 5 plugs with an ohmeter and 3 were bad. The other three need a magigian to get at them. Looks like I should replace the bad plugs before I start blaming something else.
