I haven't asked a local dealer yet, but I was wondering why deisel costs more than supreme unleaded in my area. Also, I was wondering if it costs more because they sell less of it here, or are they charging what the market will bear. That is, are they gouging us?
I want to buy a deisel to replace my '96 5.8 F-250 as the 5.8 just doesn't have the torque. Should I get the V-10 instead since it runs on much cheaper regular unleaded?

How much is the tax on diesel in your state? That has a lot to do with it. Also, it might just be a supply and demand issue. There are a lot of possibilities though. As for going with the V-10, it's all up to you're taste and what you want to pay. Maybe the extra milage with the diesel will deferr the price difference and they'll figure out about the same cost to operate. I guess it just depends on how much stump pulling power you want.

 

You couldn't be getting "gouged" any worse than we are.... #2 diesel is running $1.59 vs $1.99 for premium unleaded in the Eureka CA area. The closer you get to the SF Bay Area, the higher the price and narrower the gap; I paid $1.88 for diesel in Vacaville recently - the same price as regular unleaded. The environmentalists out here are hard at work protecting us from ourselves - count your blessings.

 

Diesel here in Georgia runs $1.19 - $1.29, right on par with mid-grade.

Between Shreveport, LA and the Texas line, I'm getting diesel at truckstops for 1.17-1.19...

 

$1.37 at a truckstop here in Reno, Nv.

Rack price for #2 Diesel, clear is 67.25. Add to that approx. 45 cents tax and another 7 cents for freight. Now try and justify 1.789 pump price. Hmmm

In New Mexico we are paying 1.39 to 1.59.

 

In DeRidder LA it's $129, Tyler Texas $116 and Albuquerque its $133, and points in between it's as high as $147.


I seem to gravitate toward Old Dirty broken, but still fixable things.

 

Just bought Diesel in Alexandria for $121.9

 

Diesel at my local Shell station here in SoCal is $1.59/gal.
Regular unleaded is $1.39/gal.
Road tax on both is $.33/gal.

 

$1.42 in Northern Iowa..... 90 octane gas is only $1.15!

 

Last 60 gallons I got in TN were 1.29 per. Which is good... what is better is my truck has finally decided to improve it's fuel mileage - I am now getting 18mpg with a 10,000 pound truck... as long as I keep it on the highway. We did a 750 mile trip, without changing tanks.
