2D Explorer Sport performance?
So I've been looking at 99 and 2000 Sport Wagons with 4WD and I really like them as an sporty, SUV. I'm ready to let go my (very red) pick up truck, a 99 Ranger with 43K in excellent shape, and- t r a d e - for a nice Black wtih grey fender flares, Explorer Sport! I see them on a lot of dealer lots. Why is this?
I like the same dash, the sun roof option (which the Ranger's can't have), and I like the smoother ride. BUT all I can find in my price range are 99' and 2000s with an average of 60K to 80K on them. Phew, that is some high milage. (Rangers do well on high miles) How do the Sports perform at high milage? Are things falling apart? What should I look for?
Does anyone have the Sport, and will you share your experiences with it?
Thanks
Mike
Mine only has about 52K on it now, so I can't speak of long-term durability, but I'm expecting to drive it a long time. The 5R55E transmissions seem to have a lot of shifting problems, but most are relatively easy to fix. Some of the SOHC's have cam chain tensioner problems, but you're probably already aware of this. The OHV engine is bulletproof.
A 4-dr is nice if you have to access the back seat everyday, but for me there's nothing like the 2-dr Sport. It's the right combination of functionality and sportiness.
