I recently bought a 2001 PSD and every once in a while right after startup it clunks. It only does it once while in park. What causes it? Is this something to worry about?
glad to know I'm not alone! my 01 PSD 4x4 f-250 makes the same thump sound. (2 or 3 times a week) It sounds like a door closing? So far it has only done it when I'm alone, and just as I let up on the clutch. ????????
ford has a tsb out on that clunk, it describes it as: "a clicking sound or clunk about 20-40 seconds after starting" - it is caused by some little pin or something in the electronic shift-on-the-fly 4x4, it's not supposed to occur on floor mounted shifting 4x4's or 2wd's, so if you don't have the dash mounted shift-on-the-fly system, then i dont' know what to tell ya
Been lots of chat about this noise. Both my '89 F250 460 gasser and my '02 F350 SRW Diesel make this noise. It appears to be something in the vent system when started with the AC on (including defrost). Most likely a vent door actuator or some such item activating. Mine won't do it if started with vent off or AC not on.
I have a 99 powerstroke, and I hear the same noise. So I read my owners manual, it says the system is checking the anti-lock brakes, when you hear this thump.
I'm new to this site, but I came here looking for information on something that I was beginning to think was my Imagination... A clunk shortly after starting on my 2002 PSD F250. Lo and behold, here it is...I'm glad to hear I'm not imagining things.
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 22-Dec-01 AT 10:15 PM (EST)]My 2001 F250 PSD 4X4 Supercrew has the same clunk 20 seconds or so after starting. I it has done it since new,:P
I do have shift on the fly.
My '01 did that after start-up and I don't have ESOF. Turn your heater control to off before you start the truck and it will probably stop. Like some others said,it's a vent door or something along those lines.
