Unhappy Oil on airfilter?

I just looked at the airfilter and there looked to be caked on oil on the underside, bottom, of the filter. What might have caused this?
Thanks

Oil from the breather element might be the problem.

Thanks, I just replaced it.

Do you mind anwering some of my questions from another thread I posted earlier?
Is it normal to accrue oil like that on the air filter? It wasn't pooling, just caked on. I'm gonna take it for a ride and see if made a difference. The funnly thing is that the little gauge on the filter box read normal, would have thought it would have registered clogged or something.
Thanks again.

How many miles are on your truck? It sounds like you're getting an excessive amount of blowby.

Bristrew,

You haven't lost any freon out of your air conditioner condensor or any transmission fluid out of your cooler in front of your radiator lately have you? Sounds like if it was on the bottom of the filter it may have come in through your air snorkle. As for the filter minder if you have the stock air box that thing will not hardly register any. I converted mine over to the new Ford severe duty AIS and it is more sensitive, it will pull it about 30%.

When you said underside I'm assuming you're talking about the back side of the filter. Is this correct?

Yes, the backside. The whole thing had oil on her. I ran it and runs much better. It has 65,000 miles.

Had a guy that owned a diesel shop tell me a few years back that a clogged air filter would cause a diesel to suck oil back through the intake. They guy was kinda a nut in some respects, but he built some trucks that would really move.

How can oil make it back to the filter when the crankcase vent goes in between the filter and turbo inlet?

I misunderstood which side of the filter he was talking about.
