2002 F-250 3500mi burning 1qt every 1500mi
I just bought a new 2002 F-250 diesel and noticed that at about 1500 mi it required a quart of oil. It smokes in the morning a bluish color. It's cold out here right now in the morning usually around 25-30 degrees F. Wondering if burning this much oil this early on is normal. Thanks

The blue smoke when cold is normal. Blue smoke is unburned fuel due to cold combustion chambers, it will clear up after a little driving. 1 qt. every 1500 miles is within spec. The engine is not broke in yet either. I have a little over 36k on mine and there is no measureable amount missing when I change oil.

I just turned 1400 miles on mine today. Have had it four weeks now. It doesn't show any smoke on cold start up, not even any white smoke---which is unburned fuel due to cold cylinders. Blue smoke could be a little more oil related. I don't show any drop on the dipstick level at all on mine. If yours didn't improve in a few weeks I'd get an engine check to make sure everything is like it's supposed to be.

1 quart in 1500 miles is probably not going to get the Ford service people too upset, although I can see why it would upset you. Keep an eye on it and report your dismay to your Ford dealer for documentation. It has been my experience that these situations will either stay the same or get worse -- they hardly ever get better. Send me your serial number and I'll check our data base and see if there was any problem (like water in the oil) with the engine before it left the factory. The serial number should be on a sticker toward the front of the left bank valve cover (7 digits).

There is not much to report (which is good). Your engine was built 9/17/01 toward the end of second shift. It was sent to test and passed just after midnight on 9/18/01, went straight through the system and out the back door. It was shipped to an outside wearhouse where it stayed until 10/19/01 when it was shipped to Kentucky Truck Plant. Keep an eye on the oil consumption. It is not inconceivable that it was shipped a quart low and not detected until 1500 miles.

That smoke is gonna be normal in the cold weather. I have 6 diesel trucks 4 international motors and a few others. They all smoke in the cold. two of the other international motors do not have a fuel heater or glow plug system and you can not move them until they are warm or you will not be able to see 2 feet behind you due to the bluish smoke. remember 1 quart is not alot when it holds app. 14 qts.
