I've been reading this forum since December when my 6.0 first broke down. I'll spare you all the details but on April 7th I ordered a V10. I was lucky enough to find a very straight up dealer who took no advantage at all of a man trading in a 6 month old truck. Anyway, I am picking the truck up this Saturday! If this engine is half as good as you fellows say I am going to be extremely happy. I'm hoping it's going to be like driving my old faithful 460, but a little better. Does that sound about right? Thanks.
Having owned a 3/4 ton 460 5 speed 4.10 geared super cab that I drove for 162k, I can assure you, you will be as happy with the V10 as I am. V10 is much stronger and gets much better fuel mileage then the 460.
I liked my 460 more, but the v10 is ok if you can get past the indy sound.
edit: my 460 was in a 79 bronco and built for bear (not really a fair comparison).
Having only driven the 460 in a 36' motorhome, I couldn't really compare the two. In general the v10 is a great engine. I'm sure you'll smile just like the rest of us every time you put the pedal to it.
I love the V-10, but you should familiarize yourself with the IAC. No big deal to change, but it's kinda like the alternator on a GM. Should be scheduled maintenance...
Idle Air Control valve. It's on the back of the intake. They say it's a real PITA to get to to change, but I've never had a problem. It looks like you should get at it from the passenger side, but it's easier for me if I get it from the driver's side. Takes about 10 minutes. I've heard you can free them up by cleaning them, but I haven't tried.
Symptoms are kinda what you'd expect from a part with the name... Truck won't idle. At first it seems to be temp related, and things will line out after she gets warmed up. Then it gets worse and worse...
There are pictures of the thing around here somewhere; it's the IAC problem that lead me here in the first place, and now I won't leave...

Welcome Home I had a 85 F-250 460 reg cab and was always pleased with the performance and I have drove a few power strokes and was happy with them also but I now have a 2002 F-250 CC 4x4 3.73 and am realy happy with it . I have put about 10k on the truck after buying it used with 67k on it and have pulled a few times and been very happy but over the week end the family and I went camping and relly put it to the test! you know you can test drive them all over but untill you use it for what you bought it for you just dont know! Anyway I was pulling our 26ft TT loaded to the hilt, and you could not get another thing in the bed of the truck and we went haullin a** down the road I figure total we were aroud 14k to 15k with the five of us, the two dogs and allllllllll the gear! The truck performed great I ran around 2800rpm at 65 to 70 mph and was going up and down hills with minimal shifting! To answer your question you will love the
V-10 compared to the 460 at least I do! The only thing I will look harder at the next time is getting the long box for the larger gas tank and I would prob. get the 4.30s. The 3.73s work great now but everybody here says go for the 4.30 if you can? Anyway congrats on the new rig and keep us updated on your performance thoughts!! I came to this site when buying my truck last November and have learned allot about my truck and got some really great input
Take Care Swanee
