How many of you have purchased an extended warranty with your new trucks?

 

With a 24-month lease, I really didn't see the need. If I do decide to buy it at the end, I can buy the warranty then. Why spend the money if I don't have to?

 

No use and waste of money, they say extended warranty, but in the fine print its extended "powertrain" warranty from the dealership i got mine from.

 

I figured having purchased the first model year vehicle, it probably was a good idea. I had an extended warranty on my 97 f150 (another 1st model yr)...I had it in the shop at least 10 times for various problems. Got a free loner car all but 2-3 times, I basically made out because I paid less for the warranty than I would have the loners. Had a 98 expedition after that truck (I put on a lot of miles and the right buyer came along), also bought an extended warranty. Trans had to be rebuilt about 6 months after I bought it. Dealer had it for 13 days, i think the loner total came out to $800, which paid for over half of the warranty. I had other warranty work too, figure I made out on that vehicle too. I didn't get a warranty on my 00 f150. It was an XL so there wasn't much to break on it. Never had a problem with it. My wife drives a 02 windstar, we got a warranty on it too, used it once. All depends on what works for you

 

I have to disagree. I purchased the PremiumCare plan for 6yr/72000 and will likely bump it to the 7.yr/100000. It is basically the factory bumper to bumper for a 50 deducible. if a radio *** breaks, its covered.

The powertrain warranty is their base warranty and I wouldn't buy that. My dealership gave me that for life for free as long as I have my service done there.

I am still on the fence about this one. I bought a car that had an extended warranty (used) and thought it was a great selling point. I would not buy one myself though as in general vehicles are built so much better than they used to be and simple things I like to fix myself anyway. As I get older, I suppose they will look more attractive assuming I make more money and get tired of wrenching on my own cars.

This is just food for thought.
If you keep your truck for a long time and at 40,000 miles it needs an engine it may cost $10,000.00 or more. Can you afford that.

I got the 7yr 100,000 because I plan on keeping her for awhile. and knowing that I have it sure makes the days and miles go by a whole lot easier. also, I like spending my money on parts that I WANT TO PUT ON her, not on the things I believe the manufacturer should flip the bill for.

 

With all the computerized electronics on these trucks that control everything from the throttle settings and shift points to how fast the truck cools down w/ auto a/c, it's probably a wise investment if you're going to keep it for a long time (as I plan to).

Although I haven't sprung for the extended yet, I will. Had other fords that went thru alternators and power window regulators like mad...think of all the powered options you may have! The cost may be on the high side up front, but there's a chance you'll need the coverage down the road. Do you feel lucky??

 

Honestly, if I thought there was a good chance that my truck would need an engine by 40k miles I would not have bought it. I am not a bettin' man much but I do think the odds are in my favor that the engine will last well over 100k miles without serious repair. After that, any warranty will be expired. Also, spending 10 large on a new motor seems awfully high. You should be able to get a crate motor for well under 5k.

Have to agree you...maybe 10K if the dealer has 4 mechs working on it over a holiday weekend with a 10% nightshift premium .

 

Ha! Yeah...reminds me of that commercial of the customer calling the mechanic for an update of when their vehicle will be ready. The manager says " I have 3 of my best guys on it right now!" and in the background they are just laying across the hood of the car eating sandwiches. Too funny..

For those of you all that trade in every four years when you pay the vehicle off, I wouldnt get the extended warranty. If you keep them like myself. I have more than paid for the last three that i have had. You cant work on the engines and you definitely want to replace parts with oem parts. I will get the 100,000 mile one when i buy the vehicle. If you want to waite you will get several in the mail when your orginal one expires.
