How do you know if turbo is working
They say there are no dumb questions, so here goes....
I just traded my 1999 v 10 for a psd diesel. Only 700 miles on it. I look forward to towing my 5th wheel trailer when this weather breaks.
I've heard of turbo whine. I don't seem to hear it. The engine runs fine. Accelleration isn't as brisk as the v 10, but, that's probably normal for a diesel. More torgue and better fuel mileage is a good trade off. Is there a simple way to make sure that the turbo is working as it should? Does it only work under hard accelleration? I've been taking it fairly easy on a new engine to break it in.
This board is great, I've learned alot from it. I did a search, but didn't find anything about this subject.
Thanks

Install a boost gauge if you aren't sure. They are fairly cheap and easy to install. The 99.5 trucks and later got a different turbo than the 99 models and they do not whistle like the early ones. Yes, the boost comes on the harder you run the truck and the more you load it. The turbo in my early 99 is quite responsive. I believe the later turbos are a little bigger and have one less vane on the compressor

You are right Powerstroker250, the earlier ones did seem to have more life to them. My new PSD is really quiet. I guess that's the trend now..........quiet. For us performance freaks however we like them loud. I'm considering(more like trying to justify with the wife) the Big-Sucker intake tht Webmaster sells here, so I can hear something a little more testosterone driven! I f I'm not mstaken, I think that if the turbo was not working, the engine would give obvious signs of protest. That's pretty much the only way the PSD can breathe.
A turbo boost gauge is a good idea, and Powerstroker250 has a great set-up in his truck. My wife thinks that after the initial cost of a PSD powered SuperDuty, that it shouldn't need anything else. No future mods for me I guess!...................Women!

If the turbo was not working the truck would have little to know acceleration and would run like it was sick. From the factory the system is set up to make sure that you can not run the turbo to hot and damage it. This is acomplished by restricting the air flow out the exhause. If you can only push so may cfm out of the exhause pipe and muffler then the rpms of the turbo will stay down.
If you want to add a little more power and hear more noise from the turbo, then you could change the muffler to a straight threw which will reduce restriction and let the turbo turn faster or change the whole exhaust out to a 4" which will releave most restriction make more power and more noise.

Thanks for the responses. I guess I was expecting to hear more tubro sound. It's reassurng to know that's the way it is supposed to be.
I'm going to look into boost & pryo guages. Seems like they should be standard equipment given the cost of the truck. They did put in a trans fluid temp guage, maybe other guages later??

How do you know if turbo is working
Les,
I've ben readinmg about that lately. I thought that as the coolant temp guage on my 99 always went to the same place and stayed there no matter what the outsied temp, load or conditions (like a long pull up the mountains with my trailer). It's too bad they don't put real working gauges in these trucks. There are some of us that would like to know real infomation and use it.

How do you know if turbo is working
Hey are the turbo boost gauges a pain in the A** to install and what should the gauge be reading under normal circumstances? As far as the question about the turbo working,i think you really can hear it when you approach 60-65 mph.It almost sounds like a low pitched whine when it starts to wind up.At least thats what i would think that noise is. luv my stroke

How do you know if turbo is working
My experience with turbos going south has only been with much larger engines however, I would think that the effects would be much the same. VERY dramatic loss in power along with MAJOR smoke belching out of the exhaust. If the seals go, you will see engine oil blowing out of the exhaust as well. As BigDeezil58 said, the engine will give obvious signs of protest.
