Anybody here pull a fifth wheel camper with a f250 psd?
Hey guys,
My wife and I are looking into buying a Titanium 28' fifth wheel camper. I was curious if anyone here has any experience hauling a trailer comparable to this size with a f250 auto psd? Mine is also 4x4 with 3.73's. We are probably going to go ahead and buy one soon but would like to make sure the "experts" on here think it'll haul it well. The trailer weight is actually less than 6k pounds but man it is HUGE for that little of weight.
I'm sure that if I end up buying this camper I'll end up installing an aftermarket exhaust, computer module, and air filter assembly to help tow it a little better on hills and such. Thanks.

I pull a fiver with my 2000 psd with the same drive train you have and you will not need any mods to pull that size trailer. However, before you buy the trailer be sure you check the hitch height. You need to have at least 4 to 6 inches of clearance between the bed rails of the truck and under side of the trailer and the trailer needs to be level when hooked up. I am assuming you have the long bed on your truck; if not there are other considerations to be concerned about. I had to raise my trailer to get the right hitch height!
Do not take what an RV dealer tells you with a grain of salt; check it out yourself and insist on seeing the rig hitched up before you purchase!
Hope this helps!

Are you guys just being a little frivolous when you say "it feels like there's nothing back there"? I agree, these trucks are very powerful and pull the trailers just fine, but when I'm pulling my 28ft fiver with my '97 F250 with 60K miles on the clock, I can certainly feel that there's something back there. Are you really saying that you feel NO difference at all?

I just have to add a little to this. (sorry I can't help with the fifth wheel question) I used to pull a bobcat trailer with a 84 6.9dsl van and when empty I'd forget it was there. I'm sure with my 01 PSD I would forget it was there when loaded. I can't try it because we sold the trail back in 96.

Lee,
I am a full time RV'er and tow a 12,000+lb Alpenlite 5th wheel with my 2001 F-350, automatic, DRW, 4:1 rear end. I have towed close to 30,000 miles in the last 18 months and believe me I do know it's back there! Mostly when going up or down a 7%+ grade. But all in all I have to say it tow's beautifully. I have a BD exhaust brake for help going down the mountains and just purchased the Superchips Microtuner to tune the chip for help when going up the mountains. Haven't towed with the new chip yet but have noticed a huge difference in power without the 5th wheel on. Based on my experience I don't think you will have any problems with a 5th wheel of that weight. Good luck!

Be sure that you have a minimum of 6" clearance between the bed and
5er. Under 6" will be exciting when going into some fuel stops and crossing some railroad tracks can get your attention when the rig humps
up and kisses the underside of your trailer.
Your rig's power is ok although I prefer a 4:10 rear to a 3:73... just a tad better on the hills.
