I have a 1988 F150 Lariat with automatic and air and a 5.0 engine. An owners manual did not come with this truck. Would someone be kind enough to tell me how much oil it will hold with a filter change? Thank you for your help.
Thank you very much. What caused the question was taking the truck to Wallmart for an oil change. They put in 6 quarts and said the dipstick showed it was still a quart and a half low????? From my experience with 5.0's in cars, I told them to drain a quart back out as I had always filled the cars with 5 quarts and did not want it over filled. Certainly not with 7.5 quarts. Of course this strange situation made me wonder....
First step is to ensure it has the correct dipstick and tube. This is a 16 year old truck and it wouldn't be the first time someone switched dipsticks or lost the original and just put one in to plug the hole.
same thing happend to me an my 90... has a 5.0....a quick oil change place put the reccommend amount of oil in....but it still showed a quart low...I told them it read wrong then the moron added another quart in and chared me extra lol...not going back there again....I cant remember how much i used to put in there when i did my oil changes....how much oil do you usually put in the filter? so its 6 quarts total including the filter? thx for anyones help

A way to be able to check it from here on out, is to change the oil ( 6 quarts ) and filter. Start it, let it run for a bit. Shut it off and leave it set for about 15 minutes. ( enough time for the oil to drain back to the pan ) Pull the dipstick and take a file and with the edge of it, scratch a mark into and across the dipstick to mark the correct oil level.
Wipe it all off with a rag and put it back in the dipstick tube. Re-check if you would like.
As the possibility of the dipstick being swapped is vanishingly small and as it has always read "full" in the past, is there any possibility that an oversized oil pan was put on this motor? Either as an aftermarket item or possibly as part of a towing package or something from the factory in '88?
Following that oil change I have added two quarts and the stick is showing just under "full". Assuming they actually put 5 quarts in, I now have a total of 7 quarts. Also, I have checked for leaks and found none.
I have a 88 F150 and the owners book says 6 quarts, I did the oil change yesterday with 6 quarts and the filter. I havent checked the dipstick, I"m not on level ground here. I have the 302.
