I've read and re-read the aforementioned method of replacing upper control arm bushings without removing the bracket and had high hopes I could use the same method. No such luck. Even with brackets removed it required a big vise and some heavy duty pounding to remove the old bushings. The offset angles and close set bushing locations make it difficult to use a press to remove them. Installing the new ones took considerable effort as well. I wound up using a 1 1/2 inch socket as the installer and a 1 3/8 inch as the receiver cup and a 2.5 lb deadblow hammer to install them. They do not just slide in easily, you have to really bang on them to get the bushing seated all the way in to the stop. The inner bushing sleeves were rusted solid to the control arm, similar to the situation with the rear shock absorber sleeves rusting to the mounts.

when I did my upper control arm bushes I had to remove the whole think because I could not push the bushes back in all the way with it in situ, I managed to get the old bushes out in place though. It was not really such a bad job removing the arm anyway the only hard part was getting the long bolts out, there is not much room for them to come out, but with a little patients you can giggle them out. I did one side in about 2hrs.
