I have a 1990 F-250 with a 5.0 EFI engine.
i have a problem, last night i was coming home from work and out of the blue my truck died. some lady in front of me slammed on her brakes to turn and i had to press on mine, i didnt slam on them but i put more force than i usually do to slow down. i kept coasting and i noticed the engine stopped. i threw it in neurtral and tried to start it up but nothing happened. I could hear the engine trying to turn over but nothing, so i had it towed home. i was checking it today and i noticed that when i try to start it i smell gas, so im pretty sure gas is getting to it. i also dont think that it is the plugs because they are fairly new and they look like no damage had been done.
does anyone have any idea what could have happened or what to check?
any help is welcome...
thanks,
dan
Are you getting spark from the coil or plug wires? Are you sure you are getting gas? It could have tripped the inertia switch under the dash and is keeping the fuel pump relay from energizing.
what is the inertia switch you are talking about? how can i check it?
also how can i check the spark from the coil. i had no trouble with the truck at all before this, it has never had any trouble starting or anything like that.
well i located the inertia switch, but it wasnt popped up..... in the owners manual it shows a picture and it says to press the button, but the button was down and couldnt be pressed. do you think it could be broken? or should i move on to something else?
Is the engine turning over good or barely turning over when you tried to crank it?
If the engine is turning over pretty good when you crank it but it would not just stay running on its own, do what mueckster said to check for spark.
What kind of Ignition System do you have? Does it have a crankshaft position sensor?
Even though you smell fuel when you crank, I would try to start it with a starting fluid in the throttle body intake (remove the air intake hose to the throttle body).
Get an adjustable spark gap tester at your local autoparts store. This spark tester has a clip for the ground and can be adjusted for any gap with regards to a specific car manufacturer.
Just the unplug wire coming off the Ignition Coil that goes to the distributor cap. Make sure you just unplug the end of that ignition wire off the distributor cap while the other end is still attached to the Ignition Coil. Attach the adjustable spark plug tester to the end of the disconnected ignition wire and clip it to the engine block. You can clip it to the vehicle ground where you can also see it while you are sitting in the driver side during cranking the engine.

the truck turns over good
i have an ELECTRONIC DISTRIBUTOR IGNITION SYSTEM that uses the TFI-IV system.
as far as a crankshaft postion sensor goes, i have no idea how to figure out weather i have one or not
ok, so i installed a new coil and nothing happened
i also took out the plug, kept it attached to the wire, and i still dont see a spark.
next i am installing a new ignition module, (but i need some long thin walled sockets)
is there anything else that i can do?
that was it, we insatlled a new ignition module (which was a bitch because even the thin walled sockets didnt fit, we had to break it apart to take it out and put it in)
everything runs good, thanks guys
yea, so everything works.
i but in a new rotor, distributer cap, spark plugs, ignition moduole, and coil.
i took it for a test drive around the block and i now hear a weird clicking noise, as i accelerate the clicking gets faster, and vise versa, could this have anythigng to do with the new stuff? or wires or somethin?
i gave it gas in park, and i didnt hear it, but then when i started driving, i heard it loud and clear. so i put it back in park and gave it more gas and i heard it. as i pressed harder on the gas it got faster and faster. So my guess is that it is RPM dependant.
