I'm thinking about replacing my turbo to get higher boost. At best I think I've seen around 14. Thinking of doing the Banks quick turbo upgrade.

I believe it is a redesigned turbo housing (clam shell) that provides higher boost numbers. I think it is around $400.

I've got the Banks quick turbine housing on my 95. The difference between the factory housing and the banks is the interior volume of the housing and the clearance between the impeller and I.D. of the housing. Being at near 4000 ft. above sea level, I can muster up about 21 lbs of boost at 2600 RPM with the 85 horse chip(vs. 12 lbs factory). More boost is possible at higher RPM, but I don't run mine any faster than 2600.

If you really want the cat's *** for turbos on the 95-97 powerstrokes, try to find a wastegated turbine housing. That way you can get low RPM boost out of it.

I'll have to see what I can find... wonder why the wastegate adds more low rpm boost.... thought it was more for blowing off the excess pressure if you suddenly took your foot out of it.

Do you know of anyone who makes these ?

bricot,
I have never done any research into aftermarket turbos for the powerstroke because I'm not putting any more money in mine, but the reason for a wastegated turbine housing is so that the compressor can make more boost at lower RPM. This is done by using a smaller exhaust housing/larger exhaust impeller to improve spool-up and turbo RPM. The reason for the wastegate is to limit boost.....because if a little RPM=high boost, then high engine RPM=TOO MUCH boost.

As far as aftermarket turbos go, I'd suggest starting with hypermax (www.hypermaxdiesel.com)

Oh yeah....

The wastegate is not for blowing off excess pressure when you take your foot off the go-pedal. That's a blow-off (or pop-off) valve. Diesels have no need for a device like that because there is no throttle plate to cram air pressure against. Diesels don't care about excess air, it just goes in the intake and out the exhaust.
