Rear axle identification f100-56
I have just started to restore a lovely f100-56 truck. The truck arrived to Sweden from California in Jan-2004 and I am trying to get it street legal next week.
Everything lookes fine and I am very pleased with it.I have only been working on brakes, bushings, doors, heater and some electrical work. It has a 289 engine and C4 tranny and It runs great. It has some noise from the rear axel but it is difficult to locate. I think it is on the right side. I am trying to get some help to locate the sound, but I really need some help from you with the identification of the rear axel if I have to buy some parts for it. I am not sure it`s original because the ID plate in the door says axle 3.92 and the plate on the rear axle is says MDM-H 3 25 6EC 313 ( the first M can be H or W ?) and on the axle it´s marked wiht yellow paint 56 FD PU ½ 3.25. It has 10 bolts but I dont know If It´s a Dana 44 or a Ford 9¨. I would appreciate some help. Mats Nilsson, Sweden

Mats-
The '56 should have a Dana 44 with a rear facing, stamped steel cover. The Ford 9" came out in 1957 and no inspection cover. It sounds like you have a worn axle bearing. The axles are easily removed by removing the wheel, brake drum then the 4 bolts that attatch the bearing backing plate to the axle housing. The axle should come right out. Do both sides and replace the seals too.
