Oil filter wrench
You did not say, write, what size your old wrench was. I am assuming that by posting in the Diesel forum you have a PSD. Go to NAPA, they have any size you need, I bought mine there for $11.67 USD. A standard auto filter wrench is to small. If the filter is so tight the strap wrench slips and you have a filter gasket leak also you may have a defective filter gasket, or two gaskets, one from the last oil change that didn't get removed. Don't need to put them on to tight, when the filter gasket contacts go 1.5 turns. Tight enough to not leak, easy to get off the next time.

Also had good luck with a clamp type filter wrench. Essentially it resembles a pair of big c-channel pliers with special jaws on the end to grab a filter. Think places like harbor freight and other after market dealers that sell those chinese tools got something similar. Paid $5 for one.

Hand tight only!
Never have used a filter wrench to put a oil filter on in 26 years! Never had one come off or leak, yet destroyed a few tring to remove them next oil change.
I worked for a Independent repair shop in my early twenties and the boss use a wrench to put a filter on and split the seal! Luckily He caught it before the customer did!
A Good strap wrench from Snap On or Mac will never give you trouble!

I lived by that until my most recent car. They say right on the filter 7/8 turn, tighten with tool... and 7/8 turn is TIGHT

Types of filters (or more appropriately, seals) also make a difference sometimes. When I was using WIX (Napa Gold) they had a flat seal and would always leak. Nothing bad, but a dribble or drop or two. Just enough to leave a line down the filter. When I switched back to Fleetgaurd I noticed they had a wedge type gasket. No leaks. Same with the Baldwin and Donaldson, both have wedge type seals and no leaks.
