[updated:LAST EDITED ON 05-Nov-02 AT 00:56 AM (EST)]hello guys i have a question for you. im looking at buying a 1992 f350 dually 4 door with the 7.3n 5 speed for $7900 i dont think it turbo charged at least the add dosent say. my question to you guys is what do i look for it will be the first diesel i have ever owned so im very new to this and kind leary about buying a diesel it looks like a very clean truck from the dealers lot is there any way to tell if the motor or tranny is starting to go out also since i dont think it has a turbo how much does a banks or ats turbo kit cost thanks

Diesel's can suffer from a thing called cavitation. This is where the coolant eats pin holes in the cylinder walls. This can be prevented by running a DCA (Diesel Coolant Additive) in the coolant. You can test for this by picking up some test strips down at your local diesel shop. They will be able to inform you of how to read the results. If test the coolant and it shows DCA then you should be ok, if it shows no additive then you are taking your chances. I purchased my truck with 60k miles and the previous owner had not run DCA's, I did not know about them at the time, low and behold... I put a new motor in a few months.
Don't be concerned it the oil looks really black, diesels are harder on oil than gassers, this takes a while to used to, when your back ground is gassers.
