I am going approx 80km/h and at 1200rpm I hear "tinking"(sounds like shaking up a paint marker). It will do this on flat stretchs, going up hills. Sometimes if I gradually accelerate it will continue to make the noise. But if I WOT the noise will disappear. Approx 3 weeks ago I put NGK plugs in and also had EEC test done last week(#8 COP shot).

I am fairly new to the group, so I feel a little odd welcoming you to FTE, but for what it is worth, welcome.

The sound you describe sounds exactly like what I am experiencing with my '97 F150 XLT 4x4. I have had the sound to one degree or another since I bought the truck last summer. I have changed plugs/wires, cleaned MAF and a few other little things. The sound is better, but still there.

One poster suggested that I use a product called Seafoam to clean carbon buildup out. Evidently, the hot carbon can ignite the fuel/air mixture in the cylinder in competition with the plug. At first I had a little problem locating the product, but it is carried by NAPA, Carquest and a few others in the Southeast US.

I am assuming since you reported your stats in SI units that you are in Canada, eh?

 

Did it do it before the tune-up?
Sounds like either a loose plug or a small exhaust leak between the exhaust manifold and the head. Look for broken studs that hold the manifold to the head.

 

Yes it did do it before tune up. Maybe original plugs starting to wear out??(started at about 95,000/100,000km) I know that I have a broken stud or two, but I don't think the noise I'm talking about is it. Also wanted to mention that if I held approx 90km/h approx & 1700rpm it would buck/jerk.

On my way home from work I disconnected the DPFE wiring and it never made "tinking" (pinging) noise. Maybe EGR, EGR solenoid, or DPFE sensor no good. Ford dealership never mentioned any other code. Would any of these not throw a code?

 

EGR problems should set a code.
Have you tried cleaning the MAF sensor?

 

Actually I put a new MAF from 2003 F250 5.4 in last week. Will that work Racerguy? I was hoping to hear from you on this issue. Turbo Ted seemed to think that I had to reprogram PCM.(posted in 4.6-5.4 forum under MAF interchangeable)

 

I've never tried swapping MAFs like that but I'm pretty sure they are the same.
You could maybe ask your dealer to see if the part numbers change up.

 

Well it's been 2 days of "ping/tink" free driving and no bucking/jerking since I disconnected DPFE sensor. Also no CEL either. This makes me beleive that DPFE sensor is NFG. I backprobed sensor and no voltage came up. I also read a post that said as "long as ambient temperature sensor "sees" temp below 32F no codes will be set."
