Penetrating Oil

Hi folks,

The subject of Penetrating Oil gets discussed occasionally over at the Garage & Workshop Forum, but I am kind of curious as to what some of you lubeheads over here in the Oil & Lube Forum have to say about it.

I've been using PB Blaster for the past year or so and am sold on it. IMO, it works better than the two old horses I grew up with, WD-40 and Liquid Wrench, both as a penetrant and lubricant.

So here's a little poll, please feel free to comment or elaborate based on your own experience(s), and if I missed a brand you like, post it. Maybe some of you even mix up your own concoction.

I haven't done tests to really know what works best, but I really like "CRC Power Lube." This stuff was formerly (pre-95) known as "CRC 5-56," at which time it included a wintergreen odor.

I like to use brake fluid. It seems to get into everything. I just put some in an old hoppe's squirt bottle, and use as needed.

PB Blaster works best for me. But I just use it for frozen bolts because it stinks so bad. I've been using it for working on my old tractor. For most everything else I use WD40. We use Kroil at work, but I think it smells like urinal cakes. Ugh!

PB Blaster. First penetrating oil I've ever used that actually worked freeing up bolts.

I almost didn't buy it when I saw that gimicky "test" on the can. Spray it in a styrofoam cup and it will melt the cup. So the h**l what? The test is complete BS, but the product does work.

I use WD-40 as a cleaner/water remover/mild lubricant at work and can't say anything else would work better for that application.

I've used liquid wrench and was not impressed. I've also used a couple others that didn't make the poll (don't recall names right now), and wasn't impressed with them either.

I've always used WD-40 and haven't really experimented with anything else. I guess I just haven't had to!

I use either Royal Purple Max Film or Schaeffer's Penetro 90. Both work for me.

PBB works, but I like the smell of Kano better. And it works too.

I have used just about everything on the market, WD-40 is much highly over rated as a penetrant but has it's uses, I use both KROIL and PB BLASTER, they both are the best on the market and if i had to choose, Kroil would have the edge, but not by much.
