Just got back from towing a 6500 lb. trailer to MT...got about 12.7 pulling around 70-72, or so...less going 80 or in 4wd. Have the Hypertech towing chip in it, but I never noticed a dramatic change in mileage (empty) with it, than w/o it...does this consumption sound reasonable?
Empty, i get about 18 going 70...16.4 going 77, and got 19.4 doing 65, all on Interstate (averages)...now, my lyin' a** neighbor says his 96 4wd ext.cab gets 17-18 mpg pulling his 32' trailer (probably 8000lbs), at 75-80! don't know, but i think that's BS....
Am wondering if a Diablo chip would do any better (for mileage) ?
I get around 19-20 mpg mixed hwy-city and 23-24 all hwy @ a steady 70mph. Thats an improvement of about 4 to 5 mpg before the superchip(60 hp). My mileage does drop 2 mpg when I put the off road chip in. Towing 9500lbs i get around 15 to 16mpg on flat ground and no lower than 12.5 in the mountains(maintaining 60-70 mph) with the chip. I have never towed without the chip so I really dont know what the difference would be. I have also had the Banks stinger kit on since I've had the truck so that may be a factor also. I calculated this on a miles per tank basis not the mileage computer( it is off a little on my truck- maybe due to larger tires?). I will say that the truck tows like crazy, even in the mountains it never drops speed (although the gauge sometimes reads 28 ld's of boost ) Gotta love them PSD's. -Philip
Sorry, guess I got carried away. I get better mileage with the chip,5mpg empty and I have never towed without the chip, but I would guess it would have to be better.Later-Philip

I think your right about your neighbor. My '97 2wd with 3.55 rear gets 17-18 pulling a 4000lb trailer at about 75 and I though I was doing good.
