How many Ford vs Chevy vehicles have you owned, and which have had more problems?

Me, I've only owned Fords, and have never had problems, except for when, in my mustang, I dumped the clutch at 6000 and dropped the pinion out of the differential. And when I gave my stock (105k) 302 Monarch Blue AV and it puked a rod through the oil pan... Didn't care for blue AV I guess...

Tell me about it guys!

'64 Dart slant six--no problems, but blew out tranny seal doing jungle patch (was a teen ager, of course!). Only owned it for a few thousand miles.

'63 Ch**y Biscayne straight six--no problems, but rusted out floor pan and brake lines, probably due to poor care by prior owner. Burned up interior with cigarette butt that flew back in window and under seat (teen ager again). Only owned it for a year.

'71 Ford Custom full sized 4-door car with 302 V8--one of the greatest vehicles I ever owned. Built like a half-ton pickup and we (me 'n the boys) beat on it like it was (still a teen ager). Had this one for two years.

'77 F100 300 I6--Great truck. Took very much abuse (residual energy from teen years) and ran great, except for valves loading with carbon (Ford put in one or two sets of, or cleaned carbon off of, valves), rocker stud nuts that would back off (one actually fell while driving along) and poor running because I was too cheap to get it properly repaired. Got new, and had for 7 years and 135,000 miles.

'84 F150 300 I6--Great truck. Had one annoying habit of frequently running crappy in wet weather (may be partly attributable to cheap ignition parts). Did go through a couple of ingition modules, but no major repairs. Got new and had for 176,000 miles.

'82 Ch**y Citation (came with wife). Ran good at least thru 113,000 miles, but occasionally would not start.

'85 Pontiac Bonneville V6. Ran good after dumping a lot of money in it. Bought at 50,000 miles and was told had had new torque converter at 25,000 miles on warranty. Soon after I bought it the tranny died. Sold at a loss, preferring to keep the '84 F150. Had for 1.5 years.

'92 Aerostar 3.0. One of the best vehicles I (actually wife's) ever owned. Runs great, most reliable, never let me down. Now has 80,000 miles. Only faults are uses brake shoes/pads at high rate and factory air con hose rubs steering linkage and eventually blew. New part does not rub. bought in '95 with 28,000 miles on it.

'95 F150 300 I6. Excellent truck. Runs great, reliable, never let me down. Has 79,000 miles. Only complaint is junky plastic concentric slave cylinder on clutch. Best running truck I ever owned, but I still think the '84 F150 is faster (boss bought it--wonder if he'd race me?). bought in '99 with 58,000 (hard) miles on it.

I have had 9 Ford products (including Mercs) and 7 Chevys. The best Ford product was my '91 Mercury Cougar with the 5.0. Had it for 9 years and drove the wheels off of it. The Chevys had really been better in the long run. I am not counting my old classic Ford and Chevys that I have.

We have owned different makes and have been able to do a comparison between manufacturers several times over. Three times in the past we have purchased similar type trucks from Ford and Chevy. They have all had there typical problems. All of my trucks are worked hard at one time or another. Long story short, the Fords have done much better than the Chevys as well as Dodge. I will say that we just sold our 89' Chevy. It had over 400,000 miles on it. It only needed a rebuilt engine and trans once. Thats actually pretty good. Basically it is something expected by any truck. We still have our 89' Ford F-150. I must say that it does not have as many miles on it but it has been very good. We don't plan on getting rid of the Ford for a while.

Hi all!

i am a proud Ford owner, infact, own three. A 90 Areostar, 85 F250, and a 65 F100, Just bought it. Anyway, I have owned a chevy, twice. My first, a 71 Chevy pickup, was ok, except when the motor reached 90,000 Then I did not have to worry about Mosquitoes. I also had a problem with the shocks breaking out of the frame. The second vehicle, was a citation. What a piece of ****!

My father in Law had a 89 GMC dually with 95,000 miles on it and it was constantly breaking down. And it was my F-250 with 175,000 miles (and the engine has not been opened up for rebuild)that would go rescue him. From my experiences, I will buy fords from now on.

LAST EDITED ON 03-Jun-01 AT 03:51 PM (EST)[p]Hmmmmm, let's see.......
'68 Galaxy 500 390
'68 Merc. Montego MX 390
'70 LTD 429
'77 F-150 4x4 351c
'78 T-bird 351m
'78 Pinto (ugh!) 2.0
'78 Bronco 351m
'79 Bronco (my baby) 400m
'79 Mustang ghia 2.3
'81 Mustang 2.3
'86 Mustang GT (wish I'd kept it) 5.0
'87 Crown vic 5.0
'88 F-150 4x2 5.0
'89 Taurus 3.0
'91 Taurus 3.0
'01 Superduty 4x4 7.3

The 68 and 70 were my first cars, both big blocks are living today in an uncle's pick-up's.
The 68 Merc. is in the barn waiting for a resto.
The 77 was my first "built it myself from scratch" sporting 12" of lift, 44" gumbo mudders, 4.56's lockers, 351c, 435 4-sp., 205 t-case, etc, etc, etc,.
The T-bird is to this day the smoothest riding car I've ever had.
The 78 Bronc was a parts truck for the 79.
The pinto was junk (no way to dress that up).
The 79 Bronco is my current 4-wheeler. It's got 4" of lift, 35" mud kings, a 26K Ramsey PTO winch, and a thumpin' system, to name only a few of the goodies.
The 79, and 81 stang's, and both taurus's were the Mrs. transportation, the Crown vic is her current ride.
The 88 was my experiment with two-wheel drive trucks (I've got no particular use for them).
The 86 GT was my hotrod, it would run high 11's and was suprisingly close to stock, well, not that close ;-).
And Finally, my brand new Superduty. It's my daily drivin', boat pullin', show offin', awesomest piece of the best never rest that ever was.

Chebbie, I don need no steeeenkin' chebbie (or mopar, or jap crap for that matter)

WHEW!! long post, bet your wishing you hadn't asked.

88 Aries, 4-banger auto: Little weak, but ok till the Fuel Injection went berserk

89 Grand Am, 4-banger auto: JUNK! Body fell apart, went through wheel bearings like crazy, lost tranny after tranny, overheated constantly, bout as fuel efficient as my 88 Chevy pickup, heater core leaked, water pump leaked, went through three radiators, leaked fuel at tank and in a few places in the line and at engine, leaked oil, burnt what oil it didn't leak, electrical system failed almost from start (no turn signals, brake lights, erattic headlight failure,) power windows failed repeatedly, interior was cheaply made and fell apart, power steering would come and go, brakes would come and go, radio (OEM Delco) would fade in and out for no apparent reason, trunk would sometimes come open going down the highway (also for no apparent reason), and finally, it dropped a valve and we put it out of its misery!

88 Chevy C-1500 Cheyenne Standard Cab Longbed w/262 and THM 400: Little rust behind doors on cab corners, lost a radiator last winter, wicked spark knock for no apparent reason, badly made dash easily broken, for some reason, it is less aerodynamic than an old Ford with a near vertical windshield. 262 ain't a bad engine though. Kills 305's left and right. Gets around 18 mpg (22 on my best run ever) with TBI.

82 Ford F-150 2wd XLT Lariat Supercab LWB w/Jasper Rebuilt 302 and AOD: OK, it's rusty and it's beaten up, I know. But the previous owner wrecked it hundreds of times and it was a farm truck in it's past life as well. I've had no problems with it yet. Only thing I'm workin on now is trying to up the 9 mpg it seems to be stuck on. This truck could pull the moon out of the sky. This is a REAL truck!

I still have the Chevy and the Ford. Sent the Dodge and Ponty to the auto-afterlife long ago.

Many, many Fords. The list is too long.
Some vehicles from the other guy, but then back to Ford.

78' Ford vs. 78' Dodge vs. 78' Chevy. Ford wins!
83' Ford vs. 82' Chevy. Ford wins!
89' Ford vs. 89' Chevy. Ford Technical Win!
(Chevy has more miles
on it but has been put
to pasture. Ford still
going strong).
92' Ford vs. 92' Chevy. Both still going
strong but there is
some talk about
parking the Chevy.
Nothing but Fords after that!

We are in the market for another truck and yes, we are shopping Ford!

Well i haven't had good experiences with GM products. My dad had an '84 GMC 3500 350 4spd. well the 350 was ok but it was a little doggy for farm use. After the 350 cracked a head we swapped a 454 into it which wasn't anything to brag about ether. Amazing enough the body was in good shape no rust at all. Finally my dad bought a new F-250 in '95 to replace the old GM. I do have one good GM engine which is a GMC 305 V-6 out of a '68 GMC 2500.

Let's see here...
1972 Chevy 1/2 ton 4x4 short-bed
350/Turbo 350
3.73 gears
33 inch tires

Had 216,000 original miles on it when I bought it for $2500. Engine was still going strong when I decided to "improve" it with aftermarket intake and carb. Some how managed to drop a bolt inside an intake port. I didn't realize it until I had started it up. Traded the engine out for a Kragen special ($700 for long block - only with a Chevy) Drove it for 25,000 miles before I was driven off the road by a Toyota MR2 and totalled it againest a guard-rail. Toyota's insurance gave me $3500 for the truck. I bought it back for $100, pulled the engine and stereo (engine to brother, stereo to girl-friend) and sold the wreck for $1000. All-in-all, made $2000 off it, and kept the engine (Which is still going strong in my bro's van).

Good points:

Claim-to-Fame - pull-started Lionel Richie's loaded tractor-trailer rig (too stupid to think of disconnecting the trailer - must have been Chevy-itis)

Decent engine/drivetrain - the 350, while not especially powerful (for trucks) is cheap to buy and build. Same for tranny. NP205 transfer case is the best. The 12 bolt axle is compareable to the 9 inch in strength (as long as you don't bust the C-clip, then you're screwed). Much better then those weenie 10 bolts current Chevy's come with.

Last decent looking Chevy made.

Bad points:

350 is just not a great truck motor
Never ending battle with rust
Went thru water pumps and starters like crazy (Thank God for Lifetime warrenties)
Stupid distirbutor is in the back, making you burn yourself when timing it
Hated the gas tank behind the seat
Glove box always fell open and cracked the knees of the passenger. Always on dates or with grandparents

Current Truck - 1979 F-250 4x4 long bed
460/T-18
4.10 gears
35 inch tires

Bought it from a friend with a 460 of dubious quailty. 460 throws a rod (and piston) at 4000 rpm late one night. Replaced with a rebuilt one (currently has about 2000 miles on it). Runs great

Good points:

Claim-to-Fame: Pulled Reno, NV mayor's Jeep Grand Cherokee out of a ditch.

Tows like a son-of-a-gun!!!
REAL truck motor
Looks better than the chevy
Pretty quick (for a truck anyway)
Still got the NP205

Bad-points

None really, the transplanted motor situation makes somethings more difficult than I'd like, but other than that, an all-around better truck

Sorry for the length

I have never owned any thing except for Ford. The only problems I had from them was my 83 4 cylinder mustang.(the only car I have owned and driven.) That thing was a $500 pile of junk. This was not Fords fault though. It seemed to have been hacked together with old pinto parts.(engine, tranny, radiator.) That was the first and last time I will buy a car from a foreigner. My 78 has your typical 22 year old fourwheel drive four inch lifted truck. All of my other ford trucks have been great and dependable vehicles except for any operator error which I admit I make mistakes.

People who say it can't be done should not interrupt the person doing it.
