Just curious what the noise is after I installed a tymar. When you really hit the gas(fuel actually).....there is a sucking sound towards the top end when it really is pulling hard noticed most when it shifts or is about to shift. Sounds like pressure release of some sort......Any ideas???????
Yep that's the joy of most intakes - that and more turbo whine. Ya get to hear that turbo trying to suck everything underneath your hood through that filter! Perfectly normal!
Dang....I thought this thread was gonna be a story about bustin' a Duramax, or maybe even a story about the high cost of fuel.........
The closest I can get you is I drag raced a Chebby 2500 with the 6.0L gasser, and smoked him. Couldn't get going to far since we were in a parking lot and had limited space. The best part was he was on my right side so he got a cab full of the beautiful smell of diesel!!
So this is normal??? You also get this sucking sound right after the truck shifts gears(even if you aren't on the gas to hard). It is extremely noticeable though when you are really on it! It seems to be right around the shift point. Seems like there is a loss of power when it starts the sucking sound. This is normal??? Was just considering it may be the high boost and tyhe truck reaching the factory kill point for boost pressure so that the truck is dumping as to not exceed the factory boost point. Think this is the case or is this just a normal sound for the tymar?????
Jerrod, my 01 P.S. does the same. I am almost sure that is the wastegate opening and closeing. By pass they call it. The turbo is spooled up and when you shift The engine RPM drops at that moment therefore you have to much boost. I have been told that you can fine tune your shift pattern and mod your turbo and wastegate, all this is suppose to smooth this process giving more power and acceleration. I read something about it a couple of years ago when I first got me truck. One of the reasons I currently perusing this site; is to find the guys who actually know how.
I installed the K&N FIPK stage II in my '00 F250 and am experiencing the same thing. I was wondering if this is the surge issue addressed/fixed by installing the Wicked Wheel??? I do not notice any performance detractions just the noise. Tell me if this is a surge issue or just the lack of a stock airbox which has mufflers and/or baffles on it which restricts air flow and reduces noise???
It's completely normal. It happens on non-wastegated turbos like mine as well. The turbo slows down because there is less fuel being burned when you are at a lower RPM. Obviously when you shift from say 3rd to 4th the RPM drop. The exhaust is what moves the turbo and less exhaust means less boost. You are probably noticing the difference more now because you are spooling up the turbo much quicker with the Tymar intake. I noticed a major difference when I installed mine.
same deal here... with the wicked wheel too. i think it's just the nature of the beast with the exposed air filter. i'm sure it was doing the same thing with the OEM air filter unit, but was baffeled to death so we couldn't hear it.
