Transmission / Clutch Problem

A couple weeks ago while driving on the free way my 87 Ranger started to make a loud revving noise but otherwise drove fine. The RPMs didn't increase and there was no loss of power but the noise was disturbing enough I pulled over to take a look at things. The noie stops when I take it out of gear and since driving it a little bit more I've noticed it seems like I need to shift up a gear earlier than I used to. If any one has any advice on what direction I should go in investigating this problem please let me know.

If the rpm's did not increase and the truck still has the same power, it probably is not the clutch. If it was slipping, there would be an increase in rpm and a loss of power. Can you describe the noise a little better. Could it be the water pump or fan? Do you have air conditioning?

It sounds the same as when you are getting towards the upper range of the rpms/speed for a particular gear. It could be a fan or pump that is working harder than it should be, but the noise stops when its put in neutral or the clutch is depressed.

If it sounds like a "werrrrrrrrr" type noise when it is in gear. And it may be quiet when the clutch is pressed in. This could be the typical problem with the Mazda trans, where the berings burn up inside the trans. One of my original threads may help you:

Fluid maybe leaking from the 3 plugs on the top of the trans. This is a very common problem.
