I need a new sending unit/pick up tube for my fuel tank. The one I have is choked with crap and the metal mesh strainer is gone. I can not find a parts store with new ones, and I am afraid any salvarge yard items will be in similar condition to mine. Where should I look.
Also, what is the best way to coat the tank so the rust & crud in the bottom of it don't clog up my new unit (assuming I can find one)

Drop the tank and drain it. Let it dry. With the sending unit out, put a heavy chain in the hole, so that about 2 1/2-3 feet of chain is in the tank. Shake the tank around so that the chain rubs all over inside the tank. Stop once in a while and clean it out. Keep doing this until all the loose stuff is knocked out. Now take it to a radiator repair shop and have them seal the inside of the tank. You can get the sealer from some auto parts stores, but, it doesn't cost all that much more to have a shop do it, plus, they are usually pretty good at it and you won't have to mess with the chemicals either.
I got a brand new fuel tank off of ebay for $120 including shipping. There are several other places online to get it for a bit more than that. I had the same crusty tank problem, and I figured it was easier to pay for it than spend those hours, plus the money to the radiator shop, to try and fix my old one. I also found a new fuel send unit for about $80 from www.blueovaltruckparts.com.
Thanks for the ideas. O found a new "sending unit filter" on one of the sponser sights - if I just replaced that, and cleaned out the pick up tube, would that do the trick? I plan on installing as large a filter as I can find immediately outside the fuel tank.
How much do radiator shops usually charge for that service, how much do those chemicals usually cost, and where can I find them?
FYI, my wife is against the truck (but it was grandpas's truck!!), so monetary investment must be minimal. Time is important too, but I have a little more time than money.
I did my little MC tank with a kit and it was around $20.00 for a little 3 gal tank.
It was two part, a phosporic acid etch and then the polymer(?) coating. You could prob just do the cleaning as described above and get some phosphoric in the paint dept of the hardware and go with that alone for about $5.00. Your friendly ford dealer has the filter/strainer also for around $10.00. The best place for a filter is on the frame rail right before the pump, it is protected and easy to service, I like the clear Fram G2. GL
So I clean the tube, replace the pick up tube filter, clean the tank with a chain, I already have a clear filter in front of the pump, can I risk going without coating the tank until I can afford a new one? I'll call the rad shop for a price on coating.
