Chirping from front of Engine on 99 Expedition

My 1999 Eddie Bauer Expedition has a chirping noise coming from the front of the engine. Its been in the shop for two days, and the dealership still can not figure it out. I finally picked up my truck and am still driving with the noise.

Details:
Chirps only when engine is at normal run temp and under load
No chirp when engine is at normal run temp and in park. low or high rpm
No chirp when engine is cold low or high RPM and is/not under load

Can make chirp noise reproduce with the break engage, trans in Drive and rev RPM to simulate driving conditions (vehicle is stationary at this point)
---- but engine must be in operating temp range ----

Replace belt, inspected idler pully, water pump and AC and Alternator.

Dealership tech said that chirp was present when belt was removed as well. Which by default should eliminate water pump as well the other items listed above.

Should not be fan, because chirp changes freq with engine speed..

HELP.....!!!!!!

I know this sounds funny, but have you tried an automotive stethoscope to try to localize what area of the front of the engine the sound is coming from?

No, by all means your thought is not funny. The mechanics had a stethoscope and were listening around the front of the engine, but could not localize the noise.

Thanks anyway....

Saw your post..........

Next door neighbor had chirping from his Mark 8.

It turned out to be the air commpressor and clogged filters. The chirping was the valve opening and releasing the air.

Good Luck................

Disconnect your air filter and remove it and see what happens. I am guessing but I would like to know what happens when you do it. Just pull the filter out and leave it off. I am wondering about the vaccum hoses there.

Have you had a chance to pull the air filter.

i have a 2002 f150 with a 4.6L in it. i have the same problem. it only does the chirp when i am say have the gas to the floor and my trans winds out and shifts at about 5500. when it shifts it chirps from the front. i have no idea what that is either. i thought it might be a belt.

I do not know if this applies to our 5.4 but if you go to the 3.0 section and read the chirping post his was resolved at the Ford dealer. You might want to look and see if this applies. I do not know enough about syncronizers. Ed

I found the issue with my engine ----------

The number 3 spark plug hole has a leak, which finally went from a chirp to a major hiss sound without load, in park condition.

The mechanic informed my that this has been an ongoing issue with 5.4 engines, but not a big enough issue for Ford to issue a re-call---bummer.

The mechanic also mention that there is a 600.00 kit which allows the insertion of a plug into the existing hole after being drilled to accomendate the spark plug as normal.

OR

The alternative is to replace the head with a re-build/new one.

:-(

BS take it to any mechanic with a lick of sense and ask them to fix it. At the very worst they would have to weld the threads and retap the hole and at the most it should be $100. Stay away from Arsewipes that could not find a leaky spark plug hole.
