3K - 4K - 6K Oil Change ????
I keep on hearing different things on when to change the oil on a PSD.
I have been changing the oil and filter every 4,000 miles, becasue allot of my driving is stop and go, and just to be on the safe side. What does ol' Ford recomend ? What do you guys do with your trucks ??
The truck is my daily driver , and have put abour 14,000 miles on it in a year that i have had it...
Thanks ,

JOEBOOST, I am changing mine at 4500 miles. Most of my driving is highway. Ford says every 5000 miles. I have NEVER done what Ford says. I always like to change mine sooner. I always say "oil is cheap"
My PSD burns about 1/2 quart between changes and I am alright with that. I know you can go a litle longer on a diesel between changes, but I still like to change it at about the 4000/4500 mark.

3K - 4K - 6K Oil Change ????
[updated:LAST EDITED ON 09-Dec-02 AT 09:41 PM (EST)]3000? WOW, you must like changing your oil (or wasting money). I run 4 of these trucks (F-350's, pulling RV's and horse trailers) commercially and use synthetic oil (Valvoline 5W40 Extreme Blue) with oil samples at changes. We use 100% LUCAS for top-offs (between changes, usually about 2qts every 4000) We go 10,000+ with no worries. The newest truck is an '02 w/114,000 the oldest is an '00 w/415,000. We've had 3 trucks go over 500,000 before trade/sale still running strong (the '00 is about to be replaced)
These engines (as any diesel) aren't made for babying, you want to get long trouble-free miles...run'em hard, don't idle a lot, and keep'em off the governor.
The people I talk to that have the most trouble are trying to use these trucks for grocery getters, or only pull a load once/twice a year.

Thanks for the input, this isn't a rig I plan on changing the oil in every 3K, I was starting to get paranoid after reading some of the number, considering going to 5K but sound like 7K to 10K isn't an issue.

3K - 4K - 6K Oil Change ????
Joe, i change mine every 5000 miles no matter how hard or easy i drive it. With the cost of an oil change and as many miles as i can put on it, 5000 miles seems very reasonable with me too. My truck is an every day drive with an occasionally towing. Considering it is the only vehicle i own, i dont have much choice but to drive. The only time i really take it easy on the driving is when i first start out after warm up and then after getting off the highway to give my turbo a proper cool down. No problems with my truck since i bought it in April 02. The best buy i have ever made ona vehcile.

3K - 4K - 6K Oil Change ????
My 2000 PS Crew Cab 60k on it gets the oil changed every 10k wheather it needs it or not. The oil is still pretty clean at 10k, and it only uses 2qts between changes. If you pull maximum payload you may need to drop down to 7 or 8k. This engine holds 4 GALLONS of oil. If you look into say Cummins oil change recomendations they say the more fuel you burn the quicker the oil changes. Less fuel burned (F-250 running around empty) longer oil changes. Put a good bypass filter on and go 12 to 15 k on changes. Should get an anaylsis done around 10k going that far out.

3K - 4K - 6K Oil Change ????
For what it's worth, here's what I do. I change my oil every 3000-3500 miles. I've simplified the process with my Fumoto valve, and buy my oil at Costco, where it's only $32.99 for a handy six pack of gallons of Delo. I buy Purolator oil filters at Sears for $2.99, so the cost of a change is about $23, and I look forward to doing it, because it gives me the chance to check out what's going on under the truck.
I'm a little "over the top" on mainenance, but one of these days, I might need that truck to save my life, and the lives of my family. I want it to remember that I've been good to it.

And a wish list that gets longer every day.
