Out of gas

Have about 1000 mi on truck and decided to run the tank down until the low fuel warning came on for information. Didn't get to gas station immediately and after a measly 25 miles my wife was bringing me gas on the side of the road. My superduty 5.4 l would go 50-60 miles after the low warning with a couple of gallons to spare. BTW mileage is not very good, less than 11 mpg. Superduty was a little of 12 mpg. Time will tell.

NOTE TO SELF: When I do a miles to run out of gas test. Bring along a gas can with gas in it. Wife would tell me to stick it if I made that call.

Rumor has it as soon at the "low fuel" light kicks on you have 2 gallons left in the tank. 2gal x 11mpg = 22-25 miles and then its roadside assistance!

I've let mine run down the last 3-4 fill-ups. The "low fuel" warning has popped up at exactly 50 miles each and every time.

I thought I read in the owners manual that you had approx 50 miles to empty when the alarm comes on. I tried the same gas test yesterday. I went approx 50 miles after the alarm came in. I made it to a gas station and filled up. 27.9 gallons and 451 miles. 16.1 mpg. 5.4L Screw 4x4, 3.73 LS. Not to bad considering what others are getting. I'm not driving it hard and have 2500 miles. Hope to get better.

About 14.7 on first tank, 15.5 on 2nd tank and had major wind. Not great, but about what I expected, the real test is when I hook on the 5000lb camper her in a week or two, I will be comparing it to my prior 03 Expedition.

My mileage was a dismal 12.1 mpg when I first got the truck and now at 2500 miles it's around 13.2 mpg. I wish I was getting some of those higher numbers like some of you guys are getting. I wonder why they vary so much like that??

You guys are braver than me, that's for sure. I don't let mine get below 3/4 of a tank, because I don't want to see the full price for filling it from empty!

I've also read that you should never let the fuel pump run dry, the pump will overheat and die prematurely.

It costs $60 plus bucks to fill up my 35 gallon tank.

Dusty, It doen't matter if you put in $15 four times per week or $60 once, still alot of money for gas.

I know, it's a lot of $ for gas regardless. It just seems less painful to me to shell out $15 at a time.

Have 7000 miles on my 2WD Screw now and consistently get 16-17.4mpg. I have ran the truck to 20 miles to empty and still only been able to get 25 gallons in it. 30 Gallon tank??? Supposed to be!

I don't have the truck yet, suppose to be manufactured April 12th.... but from what I read about the mpg.... It would depend on how you drive.... You don't need to floor it to get to that 60mph... take your time. Be gentle with the truck, you don't need to use all it's power all the time, just when you need it.
It's funny though, I own a VW Jetta TDI also, and I'm the only one out of 10 of my friends that can bring the car to over 1200 kms(750 miles) each tank fill. And doing that with the A/C on and doing around 115km/h (72mph). They seem to have trouble making 1000kms(625 miles). I explain to them the same thing, you do not have to gun it all the time.
Another one is, my boss owns a Jeep Grand Cherokee Limited Edition V8, he has trouble doing 450 to 480 kms per tank (281 to 300 miles), and when I borowed it for the weekend I made it easily to 650 kms (406 miles) and the gas light wasn't even close to being on.

So for all those people that can't do the 15 mpg or more, don't be so aggressive when your driving, just take your time to accelerate, don't gun it when you need to pass somebody, use cruise control as much as you can. And be patient in traffic, don't slam on the brakes, and then floor it to just slam on them again.

I'm not against anybody driving in these type of manners, but then please do not complain that you get lousy gas mileage.

Ron (Ordered Feb 10th, 2004, Lariat Supercab, Blue with two tone, moonroof, fully equipped, still waiting impatiently for my truck)

i am a first time truck buyer and am looking at the f-150. I am trying to make a decision on the 4.6 or the 5.4 engine. what can you tell me on the gas mileage for each? it is my understanding that some say the gas mileage is the same?
