2 wheel to 4 wheel drive 6.9 '87 conversion, am I nuts?

[updated:LAST EDITED ON 21-Nov-02 AT 07:01 PM (EST)]Help! Can someone lay it out for me? Will you need to take the tranny out of the truck to convert a recently rebuilt C6 2x4, to 4x4 configuration, it looks like just unbolting the tailpiece, and bolting on a new on. Or is there more to it than that? Thanks for the info. I'm thinking of converting my '87 6.9 to 4 wheel drive, I have a nearly complete '85 parts truck to use except its a "handshaker" manual trans. and I'd rather use the C6. Other than that, it seems like you just need to burn off the rivets holding the various suspension components from one and bolt them onto the other. Maybe I'd need to beef up the frame rail forward of the front axle, too. Just need to know if I got to do a major teardown on the tranny.

Hmm. The axles are coded in the door jamb as "73" for the '85 and "39" on the '87. What do these codes mean? Thanks again.

Hi

the code "73" from your '85 Axle means that you have an 3.54
and the code "39" from your '87 ...I'm not really sure, but I think that means that you have an 3.55.

Hope this helps

The only difference between a 2wd and 4wd C6 is the out put shaft and tail section. No you can not just remove the cover as the output shaft needs to be changed over. Not to difficult a job for someone with trans experience. I have looked at many different ways to make a conversion for my 87 F250 DRW, You can use any C6 output shaft they are all the same you will have to bolt or weld front shackles for the springs but most is not too difficult. Let us know what you find
