Soon to be New Person to the Diesel Family

Hi everyone have been reading the threads for a while now and I must admit I am impressed with you guys expertise. Have a couple of questions I need help with. AT the present I have a 8X24 race car trailer gross out at 10K loaded. I am also looking for a 4-horse trailer with living quarters and loaded will be about 15k. So far with my research (on going) it looks like the F-350 SD PSD 7.3(or the new 6.0)dual rear wheel long bed with the AUTO trans will fill the need nice and leave some to spare. Should be a safe combination.

The Horse traler pulls will short and long distance and plan to be on the road most of the summer. Now the questions:

DRW vs SRW how much difference should I expect? Is the DRW that much better?

What is the GVCWR for the 350 I described? What is the weight of the truck itself? What gear ratio would be needed for my application? Is the 15k pushing the limit of the Truck? Unless I missed somthing the truck should be fine.

I have many questions but feel this thread is long enough.
I want to THANK YOU IN ADVANCE FOR YOUR HELP/COMMENTS.

Tom

I think that truck would be perfect for you.

The DRW will be more stable when towing. I would say if you plan on towing like even 60% of the time, and it will be a heavy load, 10-15,000LBS, you will be happier with the DRW over the SRW.

GVWR with the 7.3=11,500
GCVWR with the 7.3=20,000
Max Payload=4,480
Max Trailer weight=12,600

I think the dually is only avaiable in 4.10, even if there are others, you want the 4.10 gears.
I think i answered all the questions. Keep them coming I love helping out fellow superduty owners and future owners. Good luck.

Dave, I'll go along with yer answer(s) also. If you plan to do a lot of towing, the DRW IS the way to go. It gives much more lateral stability and a whole bunch more peace of mind when yanking around them horsies.

I have to agree with the two posts above. I dont tow as much as some folks, but I do my fair share. I always wish I got a dually. I'm lookin into converting it.

According to Ford's "2003 RV & Trailer Towing Guide," the MAXIMUM weight you can tow with a F350 DRW 6.0/ auto is 13,400 lbs. with a 4.10 axle. That's for a 2WD Regular Cab, and drops to 12,400 lbs. for a 4x4 CrewCab. If you're gonna be towing that 15,000 lb. horse trailer ALL the time, you better be looking at a F450/550 with a custom pickup body. Either way, you do want DRWs- makes the going a lot smoother and easier.
