Intermittent vibration and exhaust rattle at idle

I've been getting a very annoying engine vibration at idle speeds around 600 rpm. It also sounds like the exhaust system is rattling. It's more noticeable in drive than in neutral. (It's a 2000 Mountaineer with 4.0 V6). Any ideas? THANKS!!!

Check your exhaust heat shields. It's not unusual for one or more of the welds to break and cause the shield to rattle. Try the McD's drive-thru test. Pull up to the drive-thru (or against any wall) and sit with the car in gear, window down and the foot on the brake. You should clearly hear the rattle as it bounces off the wall. You will need to climb under the vehicle and check figure out which one is loose. The easiest and cheapest way to fix is to use stainless steel strap-type clamps. Large ones can be purchased at hardware or home improvement stores in the plumbing area.
