I wish we had steady salesman at the Ford Dealership I use. I continue to go to them because we are A-plan members so the price is set. I have bought 3 vehicles in 4 years from them and each one involved a trade-in. Each time I wanted my trade in to be split down the middle between trade in value and private party and they did it each time, never found a dealer who would give more than trade in when buying under A-plan so I was amazed and continue to give them my business. I just feel bad for the salesman because in the 3 cars I've purchased in 4 years each time I tried to use the same salesman and they were gone, so got a different one each time. Guess the turnover is high in the occupation?
Anyway Jeff, how are you enjoying the new truck??? Pics???

Salesperson turnover has always been high in this business. Doesn't say much for the industry, does it? It's a shame more people don't stick it out a little longer, because it can provide a decent income. Once you establish yourself, you pretty much have a business for life.
The new truck is GREAT. I'm amazed as to how much bigger it feels than the old Ranger. And it's so quiet, you don't realize how fast you're going. What felt like 45 in the Ranger turns out to be 70 on the speedometer of this thing! We've had a couple snowstorms go through here since I got it, so it's just too dirty to photograoh right now. As soon as the weather clears (read that: JUNE), I'll get some pictures and post 'em. Thanks for asking!
I just started selling at a Ford dealership in Oregon and I'm having lots of fun...Feels good to see a happy customer jump in his new F350 CC LWB 4x4 Lariat PSD, with a big smile on his face as he drives off.
Congratulations! I've been doing this 18 years, so I know just what you're talking about. Just keep that attitude at all times. Too many people get into this business for the wrong reason: to just make money. There's nothing wrong with making money, but if that's your "driving force," then you won't last. Money is secondary; taking care of the customer is number one. If you take care of your customers, the money will take care of itself. If you aren't having fun, then you're in the wrong business. Good luck!
Jeff,
Funny you mention how quiet it is. My boss called early this morning to talk about my new F-250. Told me he was think about a F-150 and I told I had read they were much more quiet than they used to be.
I always felt that dealerships enjoyed high turnover.....They would hire a guy that they knew woundn't make it and they would get the sales from his friends and relatives for the short term .Then start again with a new guy and do it all over again...............

Mark, I just had to put my two cents in on this one. The part where you say making money is second and taking care of the customers is first, is serioulsy a big pile of manuer. No offense intended.
I've been selling cars for a living for a bit over 20 years my self. I know that ALL salesman and GM's care more about profit than making the customer happy. I mean, would you rather sell a customer a new car and make a mini, or sell them a used and make a few hundred bucks?? I know ill rather make the few hundred bucks. I just had to say something.
Also, to a comment earlier. Yes, this car business can make you really good money. For example, (im not trying to brag at all in any way) last year I sold 224 cars and made a tad over $120,000. That does include my yearly bonus.
I bet Mark does just as good if not better, he sounds like he knows what hes doing. Good LUck to all my fellow salesman!!!

You don't know how happy I am to hear you say that. I find that the more learned sales people have a similar take. Unfortunately, there are many more that feel its all about the money. But, they are not out until the damage has already been done.

I post my basic beliefs as to what it takes to be a successful salesperson in today's market, and you tell me I'm full of crap? Gee, how could anyone take offense to THAT..... Where I work, each salesperson is paid a flat fee for every vehicle we sell. Used $3000 Escort, or $50,000 Excursion diesel, it makes no difference to my paycheck. That's why, unlike the traditional commissioned salesperson (like yourself), I'm not trying to drag every new-car customer over to the used-car side, in the hopes of quadrupling my commission. No offense intended, of course. And for everyone's information, I don't make ONE PENNY extra on my FTE sales. I still get the same flat fee, despite the extra work involved. That's not a complaint, just stating a fact. I think most of you realize by now that I truly love what I do here.

Hmmm.....that's an average of $535 per vehicle; Nice job. That's just about 3 times what I earn per vehicle. Would you care to share with us where you work, and what lines you sell? I get the impression from some of your other posts that you aren't selling Fords.
great ..........we need to know how much you make ripping people off in your car salesman job...........this forum is a great place to learn about all aspects of the car buying experience.....we are all learning who to stay away from......i'm sure people travel hundreds of miles just to buy from you........used car salesmen are a pretty famous bunch.........money can be made the old fashioned way.....by earning it...........

Not only do we know you love what you do and put the Ford customer first, we truly appreciate what you do. You have been the one constant member on this forum from a Sales side that provides worthwhile comments. We can just ignore some of the others...I'm choosing to ignore him..
Keep up the great work 1956MarkII-I'll go to bat for you anytime...
Thanks. I definitely needed that this morning. I think I'll follow your lead, and do my best to ignore him. I welcome ANY salesperson that wants to join in here with constructive and helpful advice. But posts like that...........
And thanks for your efforts with Lookinfora250- it just really stinks, the position that her dealer has put her in. I can only hope that someday Bill Ford, when he gets the company straightened around, will get dealers like that to clean up their act.
I gota jump in here, and no I am not a car salesman,I am a mechanic, have worked at dealerships most of my life, and in all fairness to carsalesmen,I have seen them all,the good, the bad, and the ugly(hope she doesn`t read this),I dont know 1956MARKII,have never dealt with him on a car or truck, but I can tell you this.If you want to gather an opinion on someone here at FTE,all you have to do is surf the forums, and the arcives, read what they have to say, then evaluate what you have read.I have.I have found him to be very informative on just about anything that deals with the industry, and would also take offense to any insults directed at him(manure). How much commision do you think he makes, researching and then replying to all the questions that have been asked of him here?NOT ALL CAR SALESMEN ARE BAD!And although I do know many good salesmen in my area,You can bet, that when the time comes for my new truck or mustang(cant make up my mind)I will be getting it from him.Not many of the salesmen I know would spend their time helping others without the(whats in it for me)attitude.Well enough of my ranting.
FTE is the best site out there, too bad we dont have a insult filter!
Most of the research and help he provides leads to no commission. He does it to help out, then the member buys the Ford locally. If I am ever in the Northeast and need a new Ford I know exactly where I will go.
I'm going to step in here and add my .02, as well.
I didnt reply to the manure comment, thinking it best to ignore it. However, I'm offended at the insult and just wanted to say that Jeff has gone to great lengths to help me out. He's not making anything from me, my truck is ordered elsewhere. He has been in contact with me about this deal far more than my dealer, he's been upfront and honest about the whole thing AND will honor everything that he has said if I end up reordering from him. In my book, he's one of the few 'extraordinary' individuals in the business. I have no doubt that he truly cares about what is happening with my deal way down here in TX. And that, my friends, is priceless.
Thanks, Jeff, for everything you do - you do make a difference.
And KT- there IS an insult filter. It's the 'ignore' button.
I havn't ever met Jeff, despite ordering a truck from his dealership ( I just walked in and got a saleswoman, who was very knowledgeable about trucks I must say...) but I'de like to meet him when I pick up my truck. He gives lots of great advice to lots of people on here and gets nothing in return. Another thing about Jeff that i really respect is that he drives the product he gives us all advice on. That is credibility, I was getting nervous about the vibration problems but when he said that he bought an F-150 I thought "here is a guy in a better position to know about these problems and he bought it", so I'm a lot less worried. Thanks Jeff.
