Last time I did the M5OD tranny fluid swap Harbor Freight had this gadget which fit the fluid jug and had a clasp to keep the tube in the fill hole: Sta-Lube Gear Fluid Oil Pump. If you get a Sunday paper about every week they have an ad with a 20% off coupon.

M50D Fluid Capacity

I have changed my oil to Royal Purple Synchromax. It took only a little over two quarts - not five.

I bought the same pump at a local advance auto parts, was about the same price. Totally worth it too.

I purchased a gallon jug (with the pump shown above), and had just over 1 Qt left, so that sounds about right.

I cannot describe how much easier this task is, using the pump and a gallon jug of ATF. It took me under .5 hr to complete the job, not counting the 15 minute break I took while the trans was draining.

I have a 1991 F-150 M5od, owners manual says 3.8 quarts. and Mercon ATF. I was given 80-90W at store and had to redo it with Vavoline Mercon as I couldn't downshift. I took the stick shift off and poured it down there. Used a screw driver to get shifter unstuck from reverse.

WELCOME TO FTE, SeaF150!

I hope you went back to your store and 'educated' them since they recommended and sold you the wrong fluid, and hopefully they at least credited you the cost of the 80-90W....thankfully/hopefully it didn't cause your F-150 any damage.

I've got a 1993 F250 7.5L. It has a 5 speed manual so from what I've learned from reading I've got a M5OD tranny. Well it has about 235k miles on the transmission. I have only owned the truck since 228k. I don't know the last time its been changed so I want to take care of it now.

What fluid should I buy? I guess I only need 3 quarts of it right?

According to a lot of people of here it looks like Mercon ATF is my best bet. Any specific brands that are preferred?

EDIT: I just realized this is not an F250 thread. I apologize for posting in the wrong spot, but if anybody could help me anyway? I'd appreciate it.

I would be really surprised if your 460-powered 3/4Ton pickup has the same 5-speed transmission that was placed behind the measly 4-banger Rangers. I'd bet it is more likely to be a ZF S5 42 5-speed unit.......which required Type H fluid, and now has been superseded by Mercon V fluid.

Talking Easiest ATF Flush/Refill

I don't how many times I have used this forum since I purchased my 92 F150 XLT with the 300 and the M5R2. I have made quite a few repairs, but for the most part they all revolved around deferred maintenance. Now, I finally have something to give back to this repository!

With my new (reman) transmission, I've been dedicated to changing the ATF every 25-40k miles. I've used a few Royal Purple and Redline products and I find them all to be roughly equivalent. The differences in shifting performance are negligible.

I used to use a hand pump (fill from bottle, then move to and fill transmission, repeat) and it was such a pain in the *** I figured there must be an easier way. So I picked up a few fittings and some hose and rigged up an Cummins diesel pump (12V) to do the job. It now takes <15mins from start to finish!

My next project is to add filtration, a couple of three way valves, and a transmission cooler to prolong the life of my ATF (and make the flush/refill even faster). I was hoping one of you might have done something similar?

Thanks!
