Today I took my truck to one of those 99$ brake special places. The guy found what apeared to be 3 or 4 drops of brake fluid that had leaked down the back of my MC.
He was trying to pull the whole "legally I am not allowed to let you drive out of here" BS, I left. He found so many "problems", that my 99$ brakes turned into 800$. Funny part is while I was in the waiting room, 3 other people paid 500$-1000$ for their 99$ special as well.
So here is my question.
Anyone have any info on rebuilding a MC? Not sure if the 3 old drops of break fluid are really a problem but I would like to take care of it just in case. I am not a great mechanic but I know the basics. And I was planing on change the brakes myself anyways but I haven't had the time so I guess I have to now.
Masters really aren't that expensive to replace, but if rebuilding is what you want to do, it is similar to a wheel cylinder. Inside is a plunger, seal that pushes inward, replacing those seals, and bleeding it before you put it back on truck is a pretty easy task.
I wpuldn't waste my time rebuiling it as cheap as a new one (or rebuilt) is, I would buy it, put it on and be done. The time you will save that way is well worth it.
If I understood what I've read in the Ford factory service manual, an intermittent fluid sepage from the back of the brake master cyclinder is normal; it's the way the rear seal gets lubricated. Someone here will correct me if I am incorrect.
