I have a chance to purchase a 1979 f150 4x4 with a 351M.
The tranny is a 4 speed manual. The tranny will not stay in 3rd gear and I have a 4spd. manual tranny from a 1985 bronco that had a 302W in it.
Will the tranny work?
What do I need if it won't or any advice.
What about the transfer case and drive shafts?
Thanks and I look foward to new discussions.

No. The bellhousings have a different bolt pattern. The 351M/400 series has the samepatter nas the 385 series motors. They are pretty common, make sure to get on for a 4x4,pretty sure you have a NP 435. Rebuild kits are pretty cheap for these trannies, and not too hard to do. T-case will bolt up fine and shafts will be fine as long as you stay with a truck 4 speed, ie with granny low.
Couldn't he just change the bellhousing from the old one onto the new one ? I thought the trannies were the same, just different bell housings. I am pretty new at this though so I could be mistaken .

sorry, thinkin about those fluid pumpers again. Yes the t-18 and the NP 435 will be able to have their bell housing changed, surprised that never came into mind, thanx old fold man.
Possibly

I agree it is faster to do a search. I had already searched the topic and was just wanting to be sure that nothing new or something I missed in the search posts came up. Thanks
