Fuel Milage Survey
Y2K F250 XLT SC, 4x2, 5.4L, 5sp, 4.10LS.
Mixed driving city/highway is averaging right at 15mpg. Just highway is probably a bit higher (maybe 16).
I'm starting to think the auto tranny hurts some folks MPG more than I expected. It makes sense sortof, its a way heavy duty tranny but it's taking some power..

1999 superduty crewcab long bed 4x2 v10 4:30 rearend automatic. 13,000 miles.
Got 10 mpg mixed driving from day 1.
put in k&n filter at 10,000 miles and still
got 10 mpg.
Used 87 octane until I read that you could increase power and mileage with 93 octane and after three tanks I still get 10 mpg.
The best ever was on the highway at 65 mph, I got
12.5 mpg.
I'm easy on the gas too, I attribute the constant 10 mpg to the 4:30 rearend. I should have gotten the 3:73 as I have nothing earth shattering to tow
and the V10 has plenty of power to tow with a 3:73.
I bought a 77 lincoln with a 400 cid (61000 miles)
and guess what I get? 10 mpg.
Since I got the lincoln I have let the SD sit in the drive and it gets 10 mpg standing still.
Maybe my neighbor has been stealing my gas.

I have checked every vehicle I have ever owed once a week for mileage. With the truck I have checked it both by the trip computer and by pencil and paper (which comes out the same). best tank F250 SD Lariat, shortbed, V10, automatic 4:30 rearend gets 15.7 best highway (only driven highway empty once when less than a thousand miles on it), a steady 14 mpg average every day combined driving, worst tank 9.8 mpg pulling a 3 horse gooseneck horse trailer with living quarters, and average about 12 mpg in all pulling conditions. Sure does beat my old 460 5 speed's 6-12 mpg.

I've noticed that the angle the truck is sitting when your filling the tank can make a difference of several gallons.
The margin of error evens itself out when you average several tanks worth of fuel vs miles.
So, if you get an unusually high/low mpg figure for a particular tank, thats likely what happened..
I'm sure sure this is the case for the guy who got 18.5 mpg with his V10. Thats extremely unlikely.
