if itsan oozer( as in oil everywhere) check your motor mounts
my 76 went through a couple mounts in a year cuz of oil made alot of noise and moved alot... took the ujoint out 2 times from it
I have a simmilar clunk in my truck and but haven't fixed it yet. It is definately not the engine because it has done it with two different engines. My truck only makes the noise a few times a month and I can hear it more with the back window open. The only time it does make this noise is after coming to a stop and then I let off of the brake a bit so the truck will move and then "CLUNK".
I am pretty sure it is the rear end in my truck like was stated, but not sure what causes it. I realize the rear end is worn, but exactly how the rear end makes the clunk is mysterious to me.
I remember reading a thread on this a while back. The clunk was determined to be something other than the engine, but I don't recall.
I had the same problem. Stop and then let off on the breaks, hit the gas and clunk, sometimes it wouldnt clunk until it shifted into second but it would do it quite a bit and it was really annoying. I looked at the tranny mount, motor mounts, carrier bearing and end play, and found nothing wrong. I finally found out what it was. It was my rear breaks hanging up along with weak return springs. I turned the drums, put new springs and shoes on and poof, no more clunk. It might not be it but its worth a look. Hope that helps.
