My salesman fax'd me the e-mail he got from Ford showing the VIN and a description of the vehicle I ordered. The VIN was different from the last one that I had problems with. It had a weird code for brake type/GVWR and had an engine code for a V-10 (I wanted v-8).
The new VIN still has the same inexplicable letter (N)in the brake/GVWR slot but has the correct engine code (L).
What has surprised me is that the factory building the truck has changed from KY to Cuautitlan, Mexico! The first 3 digits of the new VIN are 3FT versus 1FT. You can imagine my questions:
Anyone else have a Mexican built?
Are they better or worse?
Can Ford still put the plate on the door jamb saying "MFD. BY FORD MOTOR CO. IN USA"
I'm sure I'll have more concerns after this sinks in.

I took delivery on a F350 SD CC V10 Lariat at the end of March which was made in Mexico. So far thre have been no problems with the truck. It has numerous design flaws but they have nothing to do with it being made in Mexico. The problems are related to manufacturing and engineering compromises by Ford to keep costs down.

2000 F-250 4x4
I ordered this 250 in April 00-- I live 25 miles north of the Ky truck plant. When the vin # arrived, buddy checked out the vin# and build date at the plant. He discovered it was to be built in Mexico...no way !! I want a usa truck..are the prices 25% less due to labor cost? why can't this vehicle be built in Ky? The dealer says no way to specify where truck I order is to be built...
Has anyone else had this problem? /Does the Dealer have any control over where order is built? Why would I take delivery of truck built 2500 miles away (with cheap labor) if they build these beast across the river from me??
Anyone else have a problem with this?
After reading your fist note I requisted that my 2001 SD ordered 7-10-00 be built in Kentucky. The dealers reply was that 1 in 10 trucks are built down south and the chances are slim that my truck will come from Mexico but the dealer doesn't have any control over where the truck is built. I offered to pay for the truck in Peso's if is made in Mexico but that didn't fly so I let the dealer know that if the truck isn't built in USA that I would not complete the purchase and my next stop would be the Local GM dealer.I am still waiting for the truck to be assigned a build date and VIN so I can verify the plant that the truck will be built in.
Let me know how it goes with your dealer!!
Well, I'm not going to kick the dealer too hard. I checked with "Blue Oval" and they said that making the S-Dutys in Mexico was not unusual and the wait would be 10 months instead of 3 if they didn't.
Ford HQ offered up that the same manufacturing process is used in each of the 3 S-Duty plants (2 in Mexico, 1 in KY).
While I regret the loss of jobs to Mexico, my guess is that I will get at least the same quality of truck from some Mexican guy who feels like he's making a ton of money and thanks God every day just to have a job.
My particular plant in Mexico has made over 76000 250s this year (2000)so I'm hoping they've got it right.
It was built last week and will arrive the week of 14 August.
Regards,
Bob
