Diesel noise Ford vs. Dodge

Diesel noise Ford vs. Dodge
I am in the process of deciding which truck to buy, either the F-350 diesel, or dodge 3500 diesel. Every salesman I ask tells me theirs is quieter.
Regarding the 2004 models, which is really quieter, both inside and outside the vehicle, and secondly, how does the 2004 really compare to previous years(noise wise).
Thanks

They're both pretty quiet. I would advise trying each one out and seeing for yourself. The D-max is probably the most quiet diesel out there right now. I like a little noise and a good whistle from the turbo, myself. By the way, can anyone see my sig? It is not showing up on my computer for some reason.

I can't see your sig. Admin. probably took it out along with all the other stuff. There are more rules around here than a daycare.
Anyway... I would agree that the D-max is the quietest out there. But between the Dodge and Ford, I think the Cummins is a little quieter. Our 6.0L PSD at work still rattles quite a bit. Who buys diesels for quietness anyway? Diesels are made to produce massive torque...and that energy releases more noise. It's natural.

The 04.5 Cummins, makes the same sound it always did, but now insted of being a loud grumble it's a very low, almost muffled grumble. The PSD is much quieter too, but still has that characteristic PSD cackle to it, which is a little louder than the Cummins from what I've heard.
I know I've lost it btw, now I'm talking of grumbling, cackling motors...lol. I agree - noise level should be only a small part in your decision either way - if at all. Do some research on both - infact do LOTS of research - choose well, it's your money.

Drive them and see whatt he noise level is inside, if you can tell the difference. Because that is where you will be when you hear the engine. I dont think there is much difference in any of them. But soime of the PSD have the pilot injection deactivated. Between all of the diesels, I'd rather have the 7.3. I love the sound it makes.

A sound test was done in this forum not too long ago between the 6.0 PSD, the DJunk, and the Cummins. I believe it was done in 4 locations: inside cab at idle, inside cab at 70 mph, grill at idle, and 40 yards away at idle ( these locations are not exact ). The 6.0 PSD was the quietest in all the tests. But I would rather have the louder 7.3 PSD or the pre-'03 Cummins in a Ford. (I want for me and other people to be able to hear the engine. )

In all seriousness, just test drive them both and see which one you like better. That's all that matters in the end, anyway, get the one that you like better, it's your money, and if you like the truck that you didn't buy better, you'll be kicking yourself for a long time.

The PSD is the loudest at idle, but it is actually quieter than the Duramax at highway speeds. The new Cummins is pretty quiet. I rode with someone who owns one of the new Cummins recently and was amazed at the difference. Main noise in the cab was the turbo whine. All three are fairly quiet so I can't imagine that noise will be an issue at all. Drive each one and pick the one you like best.
