D rated tires OK for PSDs?

I have been reading the threads on the different tire brands and sizes. All the larger tires (larger than 265s) seem to be D rated and not the E rated tires that came on the truck. I have the 265s now, but want to move up to a 285 or 295 size that all seem to be D rated.

Will these tires be ok on a 7.3 PSD, considering the weight? I know most guys run these, I am just interested if there is any decrease in safety. Thanks.

The E rated tires have a higher load capacity than the D. If you don't tow much, or haul much weight in the bed, then you'll probably be fine with the D rated tires. I've been thinking the same thing since we're taking all of these perfectly good Steeltex tires off of the Expeditions, I may keep a set to put on when my BFG's wear out.

The D rated tires are 8 ply and the E rated tires are 10 ply.I have run 8 ply pulling a GN and the rear seemed to want to walk around a little.

All depends on your towing and hauling needs,no concearn for a safety issue. I went up in size and down in load range and I see no problems.I increase my air pressure when increasing the load .The 8ply also has a better ride.

My X came from KTP with D's. Weighs 7800 lbs. empty. GVWR is 9200 lbs.

D's with 65 psi will handle 3200 lbs each. E's with 80 psi will handle 3400+ lbs. each.

D's will be just fine. If you tow, the softer sidewalls might give you a little more sway. But they can handle the load.

I just went through this delima not long ago. I have a slide-in camper that is 3100 lbs dry. Wanted to go with 10" wide rims and was having problems finding E rated 305's, so I went with D's ... so far so good ...

65 psi in d's??? I think mine said max 50 psi ...

Like everything else it all depend on the tire maker. It can even differ within a manufacturer. I have a set of 35x12.5r16.5 BFG A/T, D rated 50psi max cold (3415lb/each). BFG has some other sizes (still A/T, still D rated) which they recommend 65 psi. So what I am saying is you are probably both right.
