87 F-150 302 won't run, fuel pump?
We have an 87 F-150 302 EFI sitting in our yard. My dad bought it to tow trailers, but has failed to make it run. The fuel pump was bad, so he hooked up a small elecrtic pump in the fuel line. When the engine wouldn't run, I said it was because of the fuel pump. He says the computer is cooked. For the sake of argument(and a poor old truck), what is wrong?

There are 3 fuel pumps on the '87. There is one in each tank, then a high pressure pump in-line on the frame rail. Check the fuel pump relay first of all to make sure it is functioning. EFI requires much higher pressure than a carburetor will, so the little fuel pump that you put inline may not be doing any bit of good. When you turn the key to "on" does the check engine light come on? I'd also try pulling codes from the computer and see what comes up.

Don't forget the inertia fuel cut-off switch which is located behind the parking brake on the firewall. Mine went out recently. Just pull the connector off & jumper the plug with a large paperclip to see if you here the pumps kick in when the ignition switch is turned on. You should also hear the fuel pump relay kick in which is mounted under the hood over the left inner fender.
Good Luck!
