6.0 deisel problems?

6.0 deisel problems?
I'm shopping for a 2004 F350 and have received conflicting input about the 6.0 engine havig severe problems if vehicle was manufactured prior to a particular date. Can anybody shed some light on this ?

Do a "search" on this site, for this is simply too much available, to simply list them in one answer. You find the information considerable, and invaluable -- but you will have to do some reading.

I have a late may/03 build motor and it's been pretty un-reliable. It's somewhat of a crap shoot but they do seem to be getting better. If you're looking for the quiet diesel ford orginally advertised though, you'll have to go to GM or Dodge. Ford has given up on pilot injection apparently.
