i found my noise

After weeks of what seemed to be something coming from the front-end and maybe a wheel bearing,i have located where it's coming from.It doesn't do it all the time but i decided to put it in neutral while i was going down the road and guess what ?,the noise was gone,i tried this a couple times so i'm assumming it's coming from the air box,i heard there is a silencer in there somewhere but if it's removed then that is better.
My gas mileage isn't the greatest 14.1 or so but after comparing my truck to a guy at work i saw he had 225-70R-14 and mine has 235-70R-15 but according to my wife's car (taurus) it's aboout 1 mile off at 65,so she said so either the person that had it beforer me corrected it or my wife's car is off.Is this a reason my truck dont get the best mileage ?,and i'm light on the throttle.
Thanks

I'm not clear on the correlation between putting it neural and no noise, that would make me think that the noise is drive line related.

ok i'll try again. When i bought this truck i was coming home and then i heard this noise and i assumed it was coming from the rear-end,maybe a pinion bearing but it would come and go,not steady.
Then me and my wife decided it was coming from the front somewhere and maybe a wheel bearing.I looked at the wheel bearings and they looked good but repacked them anyway.A couple days ago when this noise came back i shifted into neutral going about 60-65 and let my foot off the gas pedal it went away but when i put it back in drive the noise came back,i saw an article about removing the noise silencer ring in the airhorn ?,so i'm thinking that is where my noise is coming from.
............................
Also this truck doesn't get very good gas mileage,14.1 mpg so i was comparing it with a co-workers truck at work, his truck has 225/70R/14 tires and wheels and mine has 235/70R/15 tires and rims but the factory specs say it came with the 225/70R/14 and i'm thinking this might be the reason my gas mileage is low ?.
Thanks and if it still doesn't make sence i'll rewrite it again .

I removed my silencer and heard no difference. What you are describing, unfortunately, sounds like a transmission noise.

When i hear it no matter what i do but it stays the same, letting off the throttle the noise is still there and the sound level is the same,i put my foot on the brakes, the noise is still there,i turn the wheel left and right going down the road, the noise is still there and the noise is still the same but when i shift the automatic to neutral the noise is gone, seems it has something to do with the engine speed or rpm, sorry i cant explain it better.
Thanks

Only noise your airbox will make is the sound of rushing air. I agree with everyone else, it definetely sounds like a driveline problem.

If you don't get the noise when you shift it into nuetral, that is a tell tale sign of a problem from the transmission and back. It goes quiet when in nuetral because the tranny is no longer connected to the engine and isn't turning. I couldn't tell you what it is though, I don't know automatics nearly as well as I'd like.

maticuno, wouldn't the tranny still be turning from the rear wheels even when it is in neutral? neutral just disconnects it from the engine/torque converter. like you, i dont know automatics very well... I drive a stick

Can't help you on your noise but regarding tires, some Rangers (my 1999 for example) had 235/70 R /15's as an option from the factory. It could be that your truck has the tire upgrade package in which case your speedometer would be adjusted to accomodate the difference in size. A 1 MPH difference at 65 between two car's speedos is neglegible!

Can't help with the 'noise', but on the tires. Check the inside drivers door the factory tires are listed here. If they differ from the tires on your Ranger you have found the mileage/speed error. I upgraded from 215/70R14 to 225/70R15, lost mileage accuracy and speedo as well. After getting a speedo calibration check I found a site on the net that delt with speedo's and tach's, gave them my info and they told me that my speedo gear had one too many teeth, went to FORD and for $12 got the corrct gear and changed it in their lot, now all's well.

Good luck and let us know if you find out what caused the 'noise'.
