Unhappy 1995 F- 250 problem

I have a 1995 F-250 4X4 with a 460 engine and E40D transmission. Currently it has 96k with a perfect reliability rating. The truck dies when you shift into Drive or Reverse or come to a stop. The speedometer started jumping all over the place at the same time this problem started. The truck seems to shift OK and runs fine on the freeway, other than the speedo needle jumping around. The check engine light and ABS lights dont stay on so it apparently has'nt thrown a code. Ford has the truck and says the torque converter is bad and tranny is shot. Seems odd since it ran perfectly until yesterday morning. Any advice or experience with this problem would be appreciated! Thanks

Sounds like an electrical problem to me rather than a mechanical problem with the torque converter or trans.

Some times the throttle body gets dirty, and behaves like that. Disconnect your air intake at the throttle body and clean it up with special cleaner. If they were trying to sell me a new tranny, I think I'd get a new vehicle speed sensor. It could be causing speedo props. Cheap, and easy to change. Under $20. and bolts right on top of diff. Worth a try before getting into the big $$. Get some electric spray cleaner for the plug connector. Good luck

I would check the speed sensor on the tranny. It should tell the engine to increase idle speed a little more when it is not turning(to prevent it from dying). I'm not real familiar with automatics, but I can tell you that if your idle speed doesn't pick up, it will die(your putting extra load on the engine like a a/c compressor).

I may be way off, but the jumping speedo needle tells me there is a problem with the speed sensor on the tailshaft of the tranny. At least I think that is where it is.

I think that Leo identified the problem. There is a sensor on top of the rear differential that provides speed info to your speedometer and computer.

The sensor can get covered with debris or the connector can corrode. Both of these things will cause the speedometer to jump. At 95K, it is time to change rear end oil and clean the rear end out anyhow. With luck this will fix the problem.

Took the truck to a well respected mechanic and he has logged 4 hrs of diagnostic time. He's sure its not a transmission problem. He replaced the speed sensor and checked all wiring and now thinks that the module that is part of the instrument cluster is the culpret. When the cluster was bypassed the truck ran fine with no speedometer problems and no stalling. Ford no longer offers the cluster new, Must wait for a reconditioned unit to be installed to be sure. It's a guess at this point, but a well educated guess. I hope it works! Part- $400.00 Labor- 4hrs at $96.50 an hr plus the 4 hrs of diagnostic work performed! Looking at a $1600 dollar repair, if it works. Wish me luck!

Sounds like your torque convertor clutch solenoid is bad. That is a pressure switch in the trans that locks the clutch in the torque convertor to prevent slipping. When you come to a stop the clutch will not disengage and the engine will stall as a result. Since the trans can't slip at idle. I just replaced one today in my wives car. The trans shop wanted $400 to do the job. The part cost me $23 with a gasket....

Letumwork,

Good luck...sounds like one of those nightmare electrical probs. I feel your pain.

These things get any more complicated, I'll be getting a Vespa.

Hope_they get you going.

Actually, you have all the symptoms of a bad speedometer head (PSOM). It sends a signal to the computer telling it the vehicle's speed. What it's doing is sending a bad signal around 1 mph saying you're going over 100 mph, so the computer shuts off the fuel. The bouncing needle is another sign. When you're out on the highway and the needle swings way past 85, it'll cut out too.

A quick check to verify this is to unplug the speed sensor on the rearend and try driving it. If the stalling problem stops, that verifys the problem. Do a search and you'll find me and a couple others have had this problem.
