My new 250 has a "crossbar" hanging below the front bolts of the leaf spring (front). It appears to be either: A) some sort of frame stiffener or B) a "bump bar" to protect the radiator/tie rods/ etc.
The reason I ask is with our custom pipe bumpers, we have always made a separate 2" pipe that bolts between the leaf springs to break or bounce off any stumps, rocks etc. before they damage some of those parts.....
The way Ford has added this tubular part, it will function the same but with a pipe bumper it will be exposed and not as slick looking as a pipe...the Ford part has large ends that will stick out.
Actually, the pipe would do both things "Bump bar" & Stiffener also... But I might be a little scared of messing with the integrety of the frame....
So does anyone know the real purpose for this part?? Has anyone take it off??
Any advice appreciated,
Byram
It's a blocker beam to stop you from running over little cars. They just started putting them on for the 2001 model year. Other than stopping you from running over things, I don't think it has any other added value. I've heard of them having to take them off to mount snow plows and so forth.
