I stripped the pinion out of my 82 F-150 today.... out running some errands no really heavy duty stuff and it starts whining and wirring, and i started smelling burning grease. Pulled off the road, looked under the truck, and grey/blue smoke starts boiling out from towards the rear of it.
Climb underneathe and all over the pinion and center carrier is 90W gear oil...grr just when i had this thing running again.
Now onto my question, what years of trucks/bronco's/vans can i grab either a 8.8 or 9 inch out of to swap into mine lock, stock & barrel?
I'd just go for the center section, but i'd rather not fool with setting backlash and all that on the gears, i'd just rather change out the whole thing.
I do know where a 87 Econoline 8.8 3.55 LS rear is, but my old man keeps telling me that it won't work under the F-150 chassis... any input on this particular problem will be great.
73-96 F100/F150, 78-96 Bronco axles have the same width and mounts. Some 80-82 F100 have different lug bolt pattern. If you change type(9", 8.8", Dana 44) of axle you might need driveshaft modifications.

Hm, i've heard that the 70-79 F-series were too narrow to swap the axle out of..and i've heard that they are the correct width...i'd hate to pull the axle and find out it wouldn't fit.
Mines got the true truck pattern 5X5.5, on all 4 corners, and its packing a 9 inch out back.
I've considered swapping the 3rd member...i know its rather simple on a 9 inch...i just didn't want to do that if i had to...kind of leary about that kinda thing. Also since i only have 1 other 9 inch and i do not know if its a 31 spline or 28 spline axle... i'm not even sure if the center will swap in.
All signs point to i'm hoping so...if not...i dunno what to do.
any axle out of a 70-86 9 inch can swap (my 82 is running 74 axles & seals) you do however, have to run the seals that the axles are machined for. For you, i would go to thed wreckers and pull a 9inch (takes longer to jack the truck up and pul the wheels off then anything) and swap it in. To do a swap it only takes 10-20 minutes tops with only one person.

there are 2 frame widths in 73-79 trucks
73-79 f100/75-79 f150 will have the correct width
73-79 2wd F250 will have the correct width (but wont have a 9" but if you ever plan on upgrading to a D60 keep it in mind)
73-79 2wd F350 single rear wheels will have the correct width (but wont have a 9" but if you ever plan on upgrading to a D60 keep it in mind)
73-79 f 350 duallies, cab&chassis's and factory dualies have narrower frames
73 to early-77 F250 4x4's have narrower frames
late-77 to 79 F250 4x4's have the correct width
I beleive all 73-79 crewcabs have the narrow frame.
Note: some 80-82 f100 9" rears have the 5 on 4-1/2" car bolt pattern
If you swap to a 8.8" get the driveshaft from the doner truck, the lenghs are different.

I've already got a 76 as a donor truck..its an F-100 Explorer Regular cab LWB, poor thing is too rusted up to be put back on the roads, so its going to donate its back half to the 82.
I'll Probably go to the F-250 Rear, if i can find one to swap in after i've done my 4spd swap, just for the better gearing and heavier axles.
I've been given another 80's F-series pickup, long wheel base, with a bad tranny, and I am trying to decide which to make into the hauler, and which to keep for street.
One more thing that I thought my be a factor in your repair. IF you "toasted" the rearend, that is, burned or over-heated the gear oil, you likely damaged the axle seals.
