catylic converters and exhaust????!!!

hey, i have a 351w and have been told i only need one catylic converter to pass texas emissions. is this true? and will there be any difference in power with only one catylic converter? will it sound different? and one more....what steps should i take to take out the catylic converter and which one...the front or back one?

You could replace both of the converters with a single three-way converter. I'm looking at the same thing with my '92 right now. Here are the measurements I took earlier today:

Front cat: 2 x 2.25" inlet, 3" outlet
Rear cat: 3" inlet, 2.25" outlet
Muffler: 2.25" inlet and outlet

I'm thinking a single 2-in 1-out high-flow converter since the Bassani setup is a bit out of my league right now. If you want to spend some money, you can get the Bassani y-pipe that comes with a high-flow converter. A lot of people around here really like that one.

You're going to have to do something at the y-pipe; your best shot is a single 2-in-1-out 3-way cat. Otherwise, you've got one pipe off of each head and no way to join them. Unless you leave that front cat in or replace it with a similar one. I'm with you--I'm not made of money, but on the other hand I'm sick of doing things over and over. I've got my heads off for the third time since last May right now...

You could hollow out the first cat and replace the second.

dumb question:

you don't need the smog pump with a 3-way cat do you? That is the whole point with not having A.I.R. injection, right?

what does texas think about losing the smog pump?

btw, does bassani y-pipes have the A.I.R. port on them?? Going to buy one for my '85 that I converted to the new exhaust manifolds.

My muffler guy removed the second cat -- left the first one in place. Now I have three inches all of the way back through a three-inch magnaflow muffler. The increase in performenace is substantial.

Fortunately Louisiana doesn't do emissions "checks". They just look underneath to make sure that you have a cat. They don't know that you're supposed to have two.

I live in PA and there were no emmission laws till this year. I have a good exhaust guy who took my converter out a while ago. I would recommend anybody to have it removed if legal. It really doesn't do anything but re-circulate poor gas fumes back into the engine via the egr valve.
I did notice better gas mileage (about 1mpg) and the sound wasn't affected.

What he did with the removal of the converter was take out the inside junk, and weld a pipe through the shell of it.
