Here is info on an adapter for a FE engine...(inexpensive???...you be the judge)
#56FE. Adapter to install an AOD transmission on a Ford FE motor. This kit includes everything including the starter.
Cost $795.00
352, 360, 390, 406, 410, 427, 428

As for the EFI, I have a good friend that installed the Holley Commander 950 TBI (700 cfm). He loves it! Install was rather involved...only time wise. The instructions were simple to follow. He gained 2.5-3 mpg and really makes a difference on start-up. Climbing hills too...NO PROBLEM!

Good luck!

FWIW: I doubt there are probably ten people in the whole USA that have converted a FE to fuel injection, since it will be a GM throttle body set up at best. Which is what the Holly appears to be to me. So, I would not expect more then one reply if that.
Considering what it would cost to do what you want to do, I would look at a 460, since they come injected. Though I have not driven or met anyone that ever got more then 10 mpg with a 460 in a truck.
Though a well running 360/390 should be able to hit 12 mpg. Throwing a AOD behind a 390 will not gain you that much mileage over a C-6. Especially considering the cost of the adapter, $800+. If that netted an extra lucky 2 mpg, you would have to drive the truck at least 26,000 miles to break even on the investment.
If mileage is a very big concern and you want injection, I do not see how you could go wrong with a 351w/C-6 combo. Your in city mileage will be decent, about 10 mpg, and your highway will be about 15 mpg. For the cost of the Holly and AOD adapter you would be 1/2 there for a rebuilt 351w and rebuilt C-6.
imo.

You can get more out of a 360/390 than 12mpg. My carbureted truck gets 15mpg with a normal C6.
I say if you want the EFI, go for it. Those holley systems are nice, you can set up fuel curves, hook up an oxygen sensor, and innumerable other stuff. Then you can set everything up with a laptop. The commander 950 ecu can even control ignition, so you can set the curve on your computer there. I really dont see how you could go wrong with one.
I wish I had the money for one. I have seen one done, but it was on a 600some cubic inch BBC in an old studebaker.

Thanks guys. I am only filling in the blanks now. I have a 390/c6 that I picked up for $100 and I have a idea of what I want but I am not sure how to go about it. I do want some mileage(above 15) and I do want power to pull with. This 54 will not be in shows(well that depends on how it comes out), it will be driven. I am leaning toward the 351AOD combo but it really depends on what I can get one for. After all anything I install in my truck will have to be rebuilt first. Ed

Use the 390. Get it rebuilt, put some long tube headers, 4 barrel carb, C6 and a 3.00 or 3.25 rear. Plenty of torque to pull and if you keep it below 2500 rpms, decent mileage for a big block. If on the way home you want to smoke the tires, put yer foot in it and make sure the smile doesn't tickle your ears.

*************,
I usually hang out in the '67-'72 Truck section, but decided to check out this Forum and saw your question. I just posted a reply last week to a similar question about adapters for the FE-to-Automatic Overdrives.
Here is what I know:
Bendtsen's makes an FE to Ford AOD and GM OD transmissions. It is very nice, but also expensive ($695.00).
Performance Automatic is working on an FE to Ford AOD Adapter. Art Carr makes an adapter for FE to GM transmissions and I assume that means Overdirve too.
Lentech Automatics makes an FE to Ford AOD adapter.
Phoenix Transmissions makes an FE to GM Overdrive Adapter.
I am not sold on putting a Ford AOD on my FE. I am leaning toward the GM 700R4 because it has a very low first gear ratio of 3.06:1 as opposed to the Ford AOD of 2.4:1.

I have taken the plunge on a 352 with a 670 CFM 2barrel Holley
Pro-jection... ( see image )
performance is somewhat hard to describe as i never really got the thing fully dialed in, overall i am pleased though
I have recently discovered i have 2 cracked rings and i am now building a 390 and i feel the 670CFM TBI will be a bit small
holley has some 4barrel throttle bodies that range from 700 - 900 CFM.. i am looking at one of the 900's coupled with a Megasquirt controller for the 390..
