instrument wiring
Let me srart off by saying I have installed a 1988
f150 302fi aod drivetrain in my 68 f100 shorty complete with wiring harness have manage to get ignition switch, wipers, turn signals ,brakes and flashers all working even in the intrument cluster .
But am having trouble geting the gages to work.
have changed all sending units to 68 year model
to be compatible with gages.
the fuel, oil and temp move a little but when i test
them with a test lite they move more, I know this is because I am adding a ground to them,
The power to these gages is powering on and off slowly and the gage moves while power is on
IS THIS NORMAL?
or am I fiighting a ground prblem?
have mounted the testlight to the cluster and get a ground there
Also do you know if there is a compatability problem
with the voltage gage ? amperage vs voltage?
all the wires matched except the charging wires
yellow and red on old harness
have read of some guy installing f600 clusters in
their trucks so hoping some one can help
You need to check for a steady pulsing of 5 volts.
It is the ground-out that makes the gauge work.
More ground/less resistance equals a higher reading on the gauge.
The newer system uses a system that requires Less Ground to actuate,it seems, this is what you have.
Have look in the electrical forum for an explanation.

Will look thru the elec forum
do you know if it is a amp or volt gage in the 68
f100
if so what would be the best route to place it in a series
the palse rate seam to be a little slow on the
5v regulator and the gages just bearly move off of full left with out touching with test light
will double check it tomorrow for voltage and timing
