awd aerostar
Can someone give me the rundown on the awd system in aerostars? Like what transfer case it uses and is it similar to any ranger/explorer setup? Can it handle the hp of a mild 5.0 motor?

The transfer case used in 90-97 E-4WD versions is unique to the Aerostar. It is a Dana-28 model, that is fully electronically controlled. There is no manual engagement. Lock up is via an internal solenoid that engages the clutch pack whenever slippage is detected. The Ranger uses a Borg-Warner model (a 1350 model I believe, but don't hold me to this) which does feature manual selection. The longevity of the Dana-28 behind a 5.0 engine will likely depend on the intended use. For occasional highway use, I would think it would be fine. If you plan on doing any off-road activities, you run the risk of burning up the internal solenoid. It is intended for short term, occasional 4WD situations.
