need used 429/460 bearings

Hey guys,

Let me begin by saying that this sight is really cool. Lots and lots of good information...

Does anyone have a complete set of used 429/460 main/rod bearings that they're planning on throwing out? I'm planning on building a 69 429 for a friend of mine, but the project got postponed for about another year or two. I'd like to reassemble the engine with used bearings just for storage purposes so that it's all together in one piece. This way, I can grease up all the journals (I live in Michigan and summer/winter thaws do lots of damage with condensation) and the engine won't be in three different boxes. When we received the engine, it was already in it's disassembled state and it didn't have the original bearings with it. I'd be happy to pay the shipping charges. Thanks! Have a great day!

I would not use used bearings. Used bearing will probably have metal imbedded in them and may scratch a fresh crank journal. Not desirable. Best to buy a new set, should only cost around $100.

429/460 bearings

DannyP,

Yes, you are correct. However, we haven't had any machine work done to the crank or block yet.

Just put it all together without tightening any bolts past finger tight. As long as you don't move it around, it should be OK.

Grease up all the journals, etc. to prevent rust. And PLEASE do not do what someone I know once did.

He thought that rags would be great to cushion the bearing journals, forgetting that cloth absorbs moisture from the air. When he took it apart again, all the journals were badly rusted.

The old rebuilders coated there metal parts with Linseed oil to keep them from rusting you just brush or spray it on and let it dry. This is what has been used when a part says to wash in a solvent before installing. I have got turned cranks that have set for years with this on it and never have had a rust issue. But make sure and coat the entire part. Just remeber to wash in a solvent before using.

429/460 bearings

I was afraid of nicking the crank if I set it in the main bearing caps without bearings. Even though we wouldn't mess with it, there is always the chance of someone playing with it out of curiousity. Maybe someone would walk up to it and start rotating the crank or something like that. Regardless, I have to assemble it in my garage and then transport it to his house. It's not practical for me to assemble it at his house. So hence, my search continues for a used bearing set...

429/460 bearings

I don't think shipping would be too bad b/c they're so lightweight. I live in Holland, Michigan. Zip code is 49423. Thanks!

I got them all gathered up and I'll get them to you, give me your address and I'll ship em and tell you how much so you can send the money for it, unless you can send a shipping label or something like that, and just have them picked up, that would be best if you can, I'll check in the morning to see what they wiegh, it wont be much I am sure, probably put them together and stick them in a bubble envolope might be good enough, or I'll leave them in a box, it is up to you, glad I could help you out.
